Jesus Christ Lord over Healing Eph 1: 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.

1.Healing is based on the finished work of Christ both in creation and on the Cross 1.1 He created all things out of nothing –including healing powers Heb 1: 2, Heb 11: 3 –Two large categories: usual and unusual. 1.2 He bore our iniquities and our diseases –Isaiah 53: 1-12; Lk 22: 19; Heb 10: 5, 10, 12 1.3 Through His resurrection the power of sin and disease has been broken –1 Peter 2: 24; 1 John 3: 8 b

2. Jesus Christ heals in various ways 2.1Law-giver: Prevention = preventive healing: Proverbs 3: 7-8; Exodus 15: 26 Healthy life: exercise, water, rest, fresh air, food Healthy family life  healthy personalities  decrease psychotherapy Avoidance of extra-marital sexual intercourse  no venereal disease Isolation of those with infectious diseases  it will not spread to others Avoidance of theft  decrease violent crime

2.2Creator: Creational healing: 2.2.1Created resistance against disease –immune system against infections –protection against cancer cells 2.2.2Created usual healing powers –recovery from infections –restoration after trauma –psycho-somatic interaction –placebo effect

2.3Master: Stewardship of usual medicinal healing powers: Creational mandate, Genesis 1:28. Also 2 Kings 20: 7; Isaiah 38: 21; 1 Timothy 5: 23. –means of biological origin: herbs, plants, oils –means of mineral origin: salts –means of synthetic origin: medication, oils

2.5Saviour: Mercy-healings A mercy-healing: unusual, not immediate and maybe not complete. –prayer by local church leaders, James 5: 14-15 –faith of interested friends, Luke 5: 17-26 –a cry for help, Mk 5: 25-34; Ps 30: 3

3.Healing is for the whole person 3.1Predominantly healing of the inner person: –forgiveness of sin, Mark 2: 6 –new life, John 1: 12-13; 3: 3-7. –restoration – Psalm 23 –death to self: free to serve God, Romans 6. –renewal of the mind, Romans 12: 1-2. –comfort: John 15: 26. –healing and binding up, Psalm 147: 3 Luke 4: 18 –deliverance, Psalm 146: 7; Isaiah 61: 1-2 –He raises us up, Psalm 146: 8 3.4Predominantly healing of the outer person: –Bodily healing, Acts 3: 8 –Raising from the dead, John 11

4.Our responsibilities re health 4.1Come to God for new life in our spirit 4.2Obey and love the Lord unconditionally 4.3Not do those things forbidden by Him. 4.4Prevent sickness: live and eat healthily. 4.5Prevent spreading of infectious diseases 4.6Pray for the sick and their family 4.7Take care of the sick and dying

6. Areas of tension re healing 6.1Not all healed now, healing of inner person remains possible –physical healing versus psycho-spiritual healing –victory obtained by Christ on the Cross versus what we experience thereof in everyday life. 6.2Healing is not always possible, care is! –cure versus care; healing versus nursing. 6.3Biblical spiritual care of the dying is an integral part of palliative care –life before death versus life after death; here and now versus eternity 6.4Seek the Lord’s will for each sick person –God’s will versus man’s will 6.5Walk wisely and trust the Lord –Overconfidence versus over-cautiousness 6.6Jesus Christ is the Lord over healing. –fatalism versus shamanism

7Resolving areas of tension 1.Regularly apply James 4: 7 1.Submit to God 1.Repent where required, 1 Cor 11: 30; Ps 38: 4, 8, 16; James 5: 16. 2.Total surrender, 1 Sam 3: 18; Ex 4: 11; Deut 32: 39. 2.Resist the devil 2.If God wants to heal them, request for healing as guided by the Holy Spirit, Jeremiah 17: 14; Luke 11: 9; 18: 40-42. 3.If God does not want to heal them, specific request as guided by the Holy Spirit, Jeremiah 17: 14; Luke 11: 9; 18: 40-42; Isaiah 57:1-2 4.Thank and praise the Lord by faith for answering the prayer, Matthew 21: 22; Romans 4: 19 - 21.
