2 Vocation to the Religious Life To understand what is meant by religious vocation To explain the vows that monks and nuns take To reflect on the importance of the religious vows The Religious Life is a calling to dedicate oneself completely to Christ and the Church, for the salvation of the world. Religious (Monks and nuns) show this dedication by taking vows. 1.Write out the definition of Religious Life. Underline the key phrases in it. 2.What does “salvation of the world” mean? **What sort of promises, or vows, could make you totally dedicated to God?

3 Religious Vows Vow of PovertyVow of Chastity Vow of Obedience This means living simply This means sharing money, material goods, talents, for the good of the community This means promising not to have sexual relationships This means sharing love and friendship with all God’s people, not just a special person This means giving your life to all This means doing what your “superior” tells you, as if it was God’s will This means spending time in prayer, to hear what God’s will is, at all times. This means accepting your duty to do whatever it is your task to do – even sacrificing your life 1.Explain what each of the Vows means, by matching to the correct labels. 2.Why could having married monks or nuns prove very difficult? **Many people think life is about being free to do what you want, success, money. So why do so many people choose religious vocation?
