Sustainable n utrition! I.I.S.S. P. Boselli

The new nutrition! Our teachers told us that we have to change our nutrition for three days for “The Commons Good and Peace” project. We mustn’t eat any food that isn’t seasonal or imported from abroad. We have chosen two teenagers from our classroom: Sasha that lives in the country and Anna that lives in town; we’re going to see how two teenagers from different places have changed their nutrition. Let’s start!!!!

Final Considerations! Sasha, the boy who lives in the country, is used to grow many varieties of vegetables on his own and he buys meat and some other products in the little country shops nearby. He didn’t change much food in his diet, in fact he always eats seasonal and local food. She changed a big part of her diet because, as she lives in town, she generally buys some imported food at the nearest supermarkets that are interested in selling this type of food, often produced by multinationals and not at all seasonal. Sasha, a country student Anna, a town student

People don’t have to pay transport and gasoline costs if they buy indigenous food, so they spend less. If people buy indigenous food, they help the local manpower. Local food is healthier because transportation is highly reduced and consequently there Is less contamination (including disease) The variety of food is limited (we felt the lack of fizzy drinks, chips, snacks, Chinese food..) The most of imported foods is essential to our diet (fruits, coffee, flour, meat, fish..)

Other considerations! We saw a documentary “We feed the world” that gave us some information about food problems; for example we saw that a lot of products are picked up a long time before arriving at destination (supermarkets and shops) and so they are not fresh anymore, poor of vitamines and more expensive. After seeing this documentary we think that it’s better to buy and eat local and seasonal products also because they are healthier. We must eat a lot of food containing proteins!!!!
