Island Species Purpose: Derive an animal that could have realistically evolved on one of the following islands. Draw and color the animal. Describe characteristics of the animal that are not evident in your drawing such as: –diet –social behavior –senses –special characteristics Give the full classification/taxa of your animal (K,P,C,O,F,G,S) and common name.

Oyster Island Precipitation: 30 inches/year Topography: sea-level to 6,500 feet, rolling hills Vegetation: mostly deciduous trees, shrubs, and grasses Temperature: Summer ave. 77°F, winter ave. 65°F Potential prey: plentiful shellfish, small rodents, birds, and reptiles Potential Predators: large Komodo type lizards/dragons Terrain: rocky cliffs by the sea and organic soil in the lower elevations of the mountains.

Lunkamunka Land Precipitation: 75 inches/year most precipation occurs during rainy season Topography: Sea level to 8,000 ft Vegetation: Water loving plants such as swamp roses, bog sage, grasses, palm trees and pecan trees Temperature: Moderate- Winter average of 60° F Summer average of 75 ° F Potential Prey: Small birds, rodents, salamanders, fish, crabs and bugs Potential Predators: Lynx, Minks, alligators, and carnivorous birds Terrain: Swamps, small lakes and rivers. Meadows and steep hills.

Jeffalopogous Island Precipitation: 60 inches in winter; 10 inches in summer Topography: Sea level to 12,300 feet, mountainous Vegetation: Evergreen forests on the slopes of the mountains, bamboo in the lowlands Temperature: Sea Level: Summer average: 85 degrees; Winter average: 30°F 8,000 ft: Summer average: 70°F Winter average: 20 °F Potential Prey: Small birds, rabbits, horses, foxes Potential Predators: Wolves (very large wolves), Dragons (fire- breathing), Sharks offshore, silverback gorillas Terrain: 100 ft. cliffs around the island with only a few gaps that lead down to sandy beaches, rich organic soil in the lowlands, more rocky in the mountains, two mountains of 12,300 ft each, many rivers that flow down from the mountains through deep canyons

Frunewtopia Island Precipitation: Daily rain, 100 inches per year Topography: Sea level to 15,000 ft. Vegetation: Huge mammal eating Venus mammal traps, palm trees, ferns, pineapple, mango, citrus fruit trees Temperature: Sea level 65°F in winter 85°F in summer 15,000 ft 0°F in winter 30°F in summer Potential Prey: River dolphins, fish, toucans, other birds, mountain goats, koala bears, water fowl Potential Predators: Chupacabra, giant spiders, killer river whales, polar bears Terrain: flat, except for one volcano at center of island 15,000 ft high, dry, well drained ground, lots of rivers run from volcano to sea, rivers flood once a month

Wonka Island Precipitation: 8 inches/year Topography: Sea level to 500 ft. Plant life: a few palm trees, dry grass, and cacti Temperature: summer average 80°F, winter average:60 °F Potential Prey: small birds, small reptiles, and a few rodents Potential Predators: small reptiles Terrain: mostly sand dunes, rolling hills, and small streams

Ayanagous Island Preciptation: 31” a year – rainy season Jan- Mar Topography: sea level to 5,000’ with rolling hills Vegetation: shrubs and abundance of fruit trees and plants, jungle like setting and many streams flowing from mountain Temperature: 60ºF – 85ºF Potential Prey: gazelle, rabbits, field mice, deer, birds, foxes Potential Predators: cougars, bobcats, wild dogs (huskies), bears Terrain: Many hills and grassy areas, forests and rocky beaches. Minimal sources of fresh water. In the middle of the island there is a canyon filled with fruit trees and low fruit bearing shrubs.

Hour Glass Island Precipitation: 5 inches of rain/year Topography: Sea Level – 5,000 ft. volcano Vegetation: 30 ft cactus, tumbleweed, dry grass Temperature: Summer Average 110ºF, Winter Average 85ºF Potential Prey: Humans, Scorpions, Snakes, Shrews, Armadillos, Praire Dogs, Sea Turtles, Sea Lions, Manatees, 3ft. Spiders Potential Predators: Buzzards, Hyenas, 10ft. Vultures, King Cobras, Komodo Dragons, Piranhas, Terrain: Sandy Desert Island with a 5,000 ft. volcano that erupts violently every two days. Slopes are bare because of constant eruptions except for the Eastern side of the island, which the volcano never erupts to. Lowlands have 200 ft. tall sand dunes covered in tumbleweed and few cacti. The sand is extremely fine, so anything stepping in it will sink down ten feet.

Precipitation: 60 inches of rain during winter with constant snow. Summer 10-15in rain. Topography: Sea Level to 2500ft Vegetation: Many fruits vary from mangos to coconuts. Small bushes and vine like plants that cover the ground. Temperature: Reaches 80°F during summer time. During winter goes below 0 °F. Potential Prey: Birds that roam the skies freely. Small animals that look like monkeys live in the trees. Humans. Potential Predators: Strong Rhinos/Dinosaurs look like animals roam the ground Terrain: Forests in most places. Island divided by large mountains at some places. Volcanoes erupt from many times killing many animals/humans. Humid air. Daily fog and volcano dust.
