Chapter Objective Know that coping with the psychological aspects of survival is a key ingredient in any survival situation Samples of Behavior/Main Points Define stress List the positive benefits of stress List ten common signs of distress Define fatigue Describe two critical threats to a successful survival Describe why comfort is not a survivor’s greatest need List and describe the survival stresses Define aversion List several tasks that can be done in spite of fatigue List and describe the natural reactions List seven ways a survivor can prepare to rule over natural reactions and stresses common to survival

2 Psychology to Survival
A key ingredient in any survival situation is your mental attitude Remember your goal: maintain life and return Knowledge and skill is good, but doesn’t guarantee you’ll meet your goal “Will to survive” -- Absolutely essential “Survival stresses” -- You will encounter them Know what they are and how they affect you and your reactions to them

3 Survival Stresses Coping w/ psychological aspects at least as important as w/ physical (environmental) aspects What is Stress? A condition we all experience Affects the body and the mind Can be positive or negative, constructive or destructive What Causes It? Life--stress is the human response to living Why is it necessary? Provides challenges Tests our adaptability and flexibility Stimulates problem solving Highlights what is most imortant to us

4 Survival Stresses Signs of distress: Difficulty making decisions
Angry outbursts Forgetfullness Low energy level Constant worrying Tendency to make mistakes Thoughts about death or suicide Trouble getting along with others Withdrawing from others Hiding from responsibilities Carelessness

5 Survival Stresses Two critical threats to survival:
Yielding to comfort Apathy

6 Survival Stresses In a survival environment, you must be able to:
Identify the causes of stress Manage the physical and mental reactions to stresses Know individual tolerance limits--physical and mental In group settings, exert positive influence on companions Causes of Stresses Injury, Illness, or Death Uncertainty and Lack of Control Environment Pain Thirst and Dehydration Cold and Heat Hunger Fatigue Sleep Deprivation Isolation

Loss of Self-Determination Anger Frustration Panic Hate Resentment Depression Impatience Loneliness and Boredom Hopelessness Guilt
