1 Curriculum Packet 2012-2013 First Grade Teachers: Amber Sharp Kathy Holt Sheryl Woodard Kym Villalva Claire Biggs

2 Daily Binders Must be returned daily. Contains: –Conduct calendar –Green folder (check daily for notes) –Newsletter (check here for spelling words and specials schedule) –Homework logs –Sight words Please sign conduct calendar and homework log every night.

3 Monday Folders Sent home each Monday afternoon Should be returned the following day Please go through all papers in the folder to review your student’s progress Please sign in the designated area each week Please don’t return things in this folder because they may be overlooked.

4 Homework Spelling (Monday – Thursday) –Complete activity at home –Sign spelling log, not actual sheet –Activities will change each six weeks Reading (Monday – Thursday) –Read books at home with a skilled reader for 15 minutes –Must read Guided Reading books as soon as these are sent home –Sign reading log

5 Homework cont. Math (Tuesday & Thursday) –Will be in green folder –Homework is front and back –Due the next day Teachers will give one warning per six weeks for not turning in homework and/or having log signed. Subsequent occurrences will result in a color change.

6 Guided Reading Guided Reading books are specific to your child’s reading level It is vital that you read with your child each night. Review comprehension questions or have your student retell the story when they have finished. You are responsible for all Guided Reading books that come home. Replacement of book is $15 as they come in sets of 6.

7 Grading Graded work will have : –3 – for work that is on-level –2 – for work that is progressing –1 – for work that needs improvement –Teachers may use + or – to give further indication of work quality. Report cards are graded in the same manner Report cards will be reviewed in great detail at your child’s parent/teacher conference.

8 Spelling Tests Spelling Tests have two grades –One on front for words (including the mystery words) –One on back for dictation Spelling dictation sentences grade the number of sounds the student gets correct when writing. Example: D o y ou l i k e t o p l ay I n th e s a n d? Each underlined letter(s) represents a sound the student should get. This sentence has a total of 20 sounds.

9 Finishing Work Teachers reserve the right to take away the following privileges if students are not finishing class work in an appropriate amount of time. –Recess –Computer lab “Fun Friday” is reserved for students who have finished all of their class work for the week.

10 Behavior School wide color system is used for behavior –Green – Great day! –Blue – Warning – 5 minutes of recess –Yellow – 10 minutes of recess –Orange – All of recess –Red – Office referral First grade teachers do not “change colors back”. Students must experience the consequence of their choices. Standards for “Gatoriffic” students are on the conduct calendar each six weeks.

11 CHAMPS (Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, Participation, Success) CHAMPS posters can be found in the hallways and every classroom Visual aid for displaying expectations Voice Levels: 4 = yell 3 = group speaking 2 = quiet speaking 1 = whisper 0 = silence

12 Snacks Please send one healthy snack to school with your student. –Examples – fruit, pretzels –Non-examples – donuts, cookies Students who bring unhealthy choices may be asked to save them for lunch or until after school.

13 Target Time 9:00-9:30 each day This is a time for targeted instruction Students will be combined with other students across the grade level to work on a specific skill.
