WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 6 Structure, Activities and Changes Changes  Interest Group level Grid: Dr. Shelestov Andrii (Ukraine/NASU) will replace Guoqing Li as the leader ICS Jolyon Martin think that the most progress for interoperable catalogues is done through OGC and asked WGISS to consider closing ICS formally

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 7 Highlights and recommendations from IG’s Grid – Highlight  The Wide Area Grid (WAG) was going forward and the draft architecture document has been delivered to reviewer  Headed by NASU, Ukraine, CAT-1 Project on Flood Monitoring via Grid obtained many good results  China Special Information Grid (SIG) successfully applied to provide emergent metadata assistance during Wenchuan Earthquake based on international EO data support  New Project “Grid Technologies for Multi-Source Data Integration” started from 2008

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 8 Highlights and recommendations from IG’s Grid – Recommendations  WAG should be one of the key concepts of WGISS technology To promote it to be WGISS key technical solution to support constellations and sensor web etc.  Grid can be used as technical basement for EO data democracy  Grid research could focus on the on-demand processing capability

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 9 Highlights and recommendations from IG’s Grid – Recommendations  Future Project: CEOS Huge Disaster EO Data Aid Action (HDEDAA) First Stage: as a WGISS project with one years period Next Stage: as a GEO action contributed by CEOS Possibilities  WGISS own the technologies, experiences and data resources Main Factors:  How to organize CEOS agencies to give the data assistance?  How to establish an efficient mechanism to take fast response for the huge disaster

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 10 Highlights and recommendations from IG’s Grid – Potential contribution to GEOSS NASU Flood Monitoring testbed - Relate to Disaster and Water, SBA CNES international WAG Project - Relate to ADC or AIP ? NRSCC Disaster EO Data Aid Action - Relate to Disaster, SBA WGISS Grid experts could be deeply involved in GEOSS ADC work - Relate to ADC

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 11 Highlights and recommendations from IG’s IDN – Highlights  SERF Population keep growth linearly

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 12 Highlights and recommendations from IG’s IDN – Highlights  Both users and content statistics were presented and showed continued and growing interest in the IDN  MD 9.8 Released June 2008  GCMD Team has produced detailed Responses to all the recommendations of the Science User Working group (SUWG) with GCMD Strategic Plan FY2008-2012 and Final Response Document  The Climate Diagnostics portal was presented and appeared to be "well-received“ to support GCOS (CL-06- 02-14)  Contributions to the Land Surface Imaging portal were briefly reported

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 13 Highlights and recommendations from IG’s IDN – Recommendations  Continue to provide high-quality Earth science metadata, and active contributors to keyword development, standards definitions and the semantic web  Work towards greater inclusion of NASA datasets  Extend metadata holdings to include popular datasets such as climate change indicators  Continue to promote the GCMD “Brand” through papers, posters etc  Encourage the creation of provider-maintained metadata, exploiting DocBuilder and web interface enhancements  Continue to develop Strategic Plan

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 14 Highlights and recommendations from IG’s Web Services – Highlight  Established after WGISS-25, The Web Services Interest Group held its first meeting at WGISS-26, detailed the purpose of Web Services Interest Group  Several presentations were made regarding strategies, plans and lessons-learned with using OGC and other Web Services  Layout a good guidance to a Web services-based SOA through USGS/EROS activities related to the re- architecting and redesigning Earth Explorer and GloVis, such approach could create a new baseline for future capabilities  Interest Group members also discussed ideas for continuing to engage in technical exchanges via telecons and other forums throughout the coming year

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 15 Highlights and recommendations from IG’s Web Services – Summary and Recommendations  Continue with plans to evolve EE and GloVis into SOA, Web services architecture  Collaborate with CEOS and US GEO interoperability efforts  Initiate investigations into performance mitigation approaches and solutions  Pursue prototypes to more deeply explore Web Service implementation and performance issues and feasibility  Web Services are a part of the future

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 16 Highlights and recommendations from IG’s Data Services  Under consideration and discussed individuals  It should be service-oriented and concentrated on how to provide long term or sustainable data services  It may an important potential services to provide data assistance to WGISS activities  Call for CEOS agencies participations and ideas to layout its objects, forms and activities

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 17 Technical issues and questions Based on the requirements from GEO, Most activities are mixed technical issues and projects recently What should be the object of IG’s?  Technical-oriented? Projected-oriented? What is the core technologies of GEOSS and how to make our contribution to GEO ?  Registry  Clearinghouse  Portal  Interoperability  …… WGISS owned many technologies but how to make it become whole set to support a dedicated system or application

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 18 Recommendations from Technical point of view How to identify WGISS IGs ?  Project-Oriented technology IG Promote the applications of new technologies in the project Concentrated on the solutions of technical problems  Technology-Driven project IG Promote the applications of new technologies in the project Concentrated on the application of mixed technologies

WGISS-26, Boulder Colorado, USA Sep. 22-26, 2008 19 Recommendations from Technical point of view WGISS Structures and Meeting forms  Long term and short term Long term – Technology-oriented, Services-oriented Short term – Project-oriented  Themes-oriented meeting – mixed technical issues and projects together Such as Sensor Web Day Next may Web services Day (Half Day) Data Services Day ……
