2 Fascism A governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, ect., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

3 Characteristics of fascism Racism is very strong No human rights Government controls everything- form of socialism Authorities have power to enforce anything Punishment is very harsh Labor is suppressed Religion and government are intertwined

4 Mussolini’s rise to power Mussolini attracted the majority of the Italian population by using nationalistic, anti liberal, and anti socialistic propaganda which served as a threat to the rest of the world.

5 Mussolini’s Beliefs He believed he could bring about a new Roman Empire that would be strong enough to be recognized around the world. He believed that fascism was a religious concept. Inspired dictators fascism

7 Blackshirts Fascist paramilitary groups in Italy during the period right after World War l and until the end or World War ll. Divided up into six categories- Zona, Legione, Coorte, Centuria, Manipolo, and Squadra. Established in 1919 Mussolini was the leader Executed functions were carried out by the chief of staff Militia

8 Life in Fascist Italy Very sexist and racist People had very little control over their personal lives There was a secret police- OVRA. Founded in 1927.

9 Economy The economy was controlled by state corporations At the end of WWl, the economy was very weak, inflation, mass unemployment, food shortages, and strikes Depression

11 Italy’s role in WWII Italy began its part in WWII on June 10 th, 1940 by helping Germany invade France. During the war, Italy fought against the allies with Germany and Japan. After the Japanese attack on Pear Harbor, Italy and Germany declared war on the US at the same time (just like WWl)

12 Mussolini’s Death There were many assassination attempts on Mussolini while he was the leader of Italy, but none were successful. Mussolini and his mistress was finally executed by a firing squad on April 28 th, 1945.

13 Impact of war on Italy Although Italy did not play a big part in terms of Combat in WWll, they made a huge contribution on the defeat of Germany. They caused Germany to delay the operation of Barbarossa which would have reinforced their allies. (invasion of Russia)
