2 2015 Case Competition For 2015 the Asparagus Club has again generously agreed to provide prize money for the contest – Amounts to be determined by 12/01/2014. This is the fifth year that the Club has sponsored the competition. Over the past four years the Club has awarded almost $30,000 to the competition. 2

4 2015 Case Competition Main Question of the Case: Printing and distribution of retail circulars are a significant expense. If printed circulars are eliminated, or if fewer circulars are printed and delivered, how will the sales generated by today’s retail circulars be replaced? 4

5 2015 Case Competition Case Parameters: Retail circulars are an integral of Wakefern’s retail marketing plan. Wakefern and the Shoprite retailers are committed to high/ low retailing. Questions Raised by the Case: (1) What will the next generation of retail circulars look like, (2) how will shoppers use weekly circulars in the future and (3) how can independent retailers better communicate with today’s consumer? 5

6 2015 Case Competition Primary Research: Wakefern will electronically survey 2 million retail consumers with student supplied questions in late October. Questions to NGA prior to 10/06/2014. Final survey and completed results provided to all participating universities on or about 11/14/2014. Supplemental Data: While students are encouraged to develop additional information students are not to contact Wakefern or individual Shoprite stores, their suppliers or customers, or tour the company’s stores as part of this activity. 6

7 2015 Case Competition Each student team will have fifteen(15) minutes to make their presentation to the judges; and then the judges will have approximately five minutes to pose questions to the students. Students may provide the judges with printed (8.5”X11”) materials/ copies of their presentation when they present. 7

8 2015 Case Competition The Asparagus Club has asked that each presenting student team consist of between four(4) and six(6) undergraduate students. Graduate students and additional students can “work on” the presentation and share any prize money; however only four(4) to six(6) students may present, advance the PPT and respond to questions. 8

9 2015 Case Competition There will be a LCD projector in the competition rooms. Each university should plan to provide their own laptop computer (and remote control if desired.) On Sunday each school will have ten(10) minutes to confirm system compatibility. Internet access will not be available. 9

10 2015 Case Competition Other than the previously identified printed materials, additional easels, displays, etc. are not allowed. A university may record their presentation if they wish to. No school can record another school without the presenting school’s consent. 10

11 2015 Case Competition The competition is open to all NGA Convention attendees. Students participating in the competition are not permitted to view other students’ presentations. Faculty, staff and non-participating students are encouraged to attend mind-full of the no coaching/ scouting stipulation. 11

12 2015 Case Competition The competition will be two rounds. The first round will Sunday (potentially starting at 11:00.) The Finals will be on Monday afternoon. The winning school will be expected to present at a Tuesday morning workshop. 12

13 2015 Case Competition On Sunday afternoon before the competition each school should provide NGA with: A copy of their presentation in Power Point or PDF for the NGA web site (another program can be used in the competition.) Signed “Permission to Record” forms completed by all student presenters. 13

14 2015 Case Competition – Sunday – Competition Brackets 16 schools – 4 schools per flight/ 4 flights – each winner advances. 13-15 schools – 3 or 4 schools per flight/ 4 flights - each winner advances. 12 schools – 3 schools per flight/ 4 flights – each winner advances. 9-11 schools – 3 or 4 schools per flight/ 3 flights - each winner advances. 8 schools – 4 schools per flight/ 2 flights – top two from each flight advances. 14

15 2015 Case Competition - Sunday Schools will be grouped into flights randomly using a deck of cards. High to low card value/ Aces high. Suit value – spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs. Presentation order will be high to low within each flight. 15

16 2015 Case Competition – Judging Procedures Judges will be recruited from NGA convention attendees. Judges will be asked to disclose any relationships with a participating university (alumni, child attending, etc.) Universities will be asked about potential relationships with the judges. Judging panels will be balanced. 16

17 2015 Case Competition – Judging procedures Each judge will individually, and without discussion complete the provided evaluation. Each judge will then rank the schools first, second, third and fourth. Rankings will be aggregated. Anonymous evaluation sheets will be provided to the universities at the end of the competition. 17
