REDD+ FOR THE GUIANA SHIELD Technical Cooperation Project REGIONAL INITIATIVES Anne Martinet, ONF International 6 th August 2013 1 st Steering Committee, Paramaribo

Overview: Guiana Shield Regional Initiatives Regional platforms:  Guiana Shield Facility (GSF) (replaced Guiana Shield Initiative (GSI))  Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA) Projects:  AMAZALERT research project on impact of climate change &land use in Amazonia  Monitoring of forest cover in the Amazon area  Regional Modelling Project  SarVision Projects for the Guiana Shield

Aim: Build an eco-regional approach to conservation and sustainable development of the Guiana Shield. Time frame: 2000-2004 (exploratory phase); 2006-2010 (testing phase). Replaced by Guiana Shield Facility Coordinator: UNDP Guyana / IUCN NL Partners: Iwokrama (GY), SEMA (BR), ACATISEMA (CO), European Commission Government of Suriname, Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs (NL). Selected Objectives:  Testing phase - set up pilot projects in representative ecosystems of the Guiana Shield eco-region to test mechanisms of compensation for the provision of ecosystem services (climate regulation, biodiversity, freshwater services).  Pilot projects in North Saramacca (SR), Iwokrama (GY), Iratapuru (BR), Matavén (CO) Activities directly related to the project objectives  Land cover and vegetation type (change) mapping using MODIS optical imagery at 250m  Integrated framework for monitoring at different scales  Tools to verify ecosystem integrity based on a system of monitoring indicators Guiana Shield Initiative (GSI)

Aim: Support conservation and sustainable development of the Guiana Shield and enable the six Guiana Shield countries (and their local communities) to finance, develop, manage and benefit from their natural resources. Budget: € 4,698,477 Time frame: August 2010 to December 2014 Coordinator: UNDP Guyana Participating countries: Brazil (Amapá and Amazonas State), Colombia, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana Relevant objectives:  Long-term mechanism to address national and regional environmental issues related to management of ecosystems  Enhance knowledge / improved capacity of stakeholder institutions to conserve and sustainably develop eco-region  Develop integrated eco-regional policy and sustainable financial mechanism that compensates local ecosystem managers and environmentally responsible businesses for the environmental goods and services they deliver Guiana Shield Facility (GSF)

Map credit: Guiana Shield Facility Guiana Shield Facility (GSF) Activities directly related to the project objectives  Strengthening of Guyana’s technical capacity to implement MRVs and other REDD+ related activities  National support for REDD+ RPP in Suriname  Regional events (Congress for biodiversity…)  Studies (Assessment of small scale gold mining impacts in the transboundary areas of northeast Brazil, French Guiana and Suriname…)

Aim: Treaty promotes joint actions for equitable results towards sustainable development and the rational use of the Amazonian natural resources while committing to environmental preservation. Time frame: 3 July 1978 to date Participating countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela Strategic lines :  Conservation and sustainable use of renewable natural resources  Knowledge management and technological exchange  Regional integration and competitiveness  Institutional strenghtening Example of activities directly related to the project objectives : Training courses in partnership with INPE on remote sensing, digital image processing and interpretation, geoprocessing and radar mapping techniques, and INPE’s Terramazon system Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA)

Aim: Examine how global and regional climate and land-use changes will impact Amazonian forests, agriculture, waters, and people Time Frame: September 2011 to August 2014 Budget: € 4.7 million Coordinator: Alterra (NL) Partners: INPE (BR), MetOffice (UK), CNRS/IPSL (FR), VU (NL), EMBRAPA (BR), UGENT (BE), JR (AT), UEDIN (UK), FAN (BO), PIK (DE), UNIVLEEDS (UK), USP (BR), UNAL (CO) Relevant objectives:  Modelling of interactions between societal and natural contributors to land use /cover  Improve modelling and understanding of complex interactions between natural systems, including impacts on these systems caused by socio-economic forces, policies and programs AMAZALERT: Research project on impact of climate change & land-use change in Amazonia

Aim: Develop the ability to monitor deforestation, changes in land use and forest use in member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA) Budget: R$ 27.670.630,00 Time frame: 5 years (from 2013) Coordinator: OTCA (Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization) Partners: OTCA member states, Amazon Fund (BR), GiZ (DE), ITTO Relevant objectives:  Installation and strengthening of national observation systems, through the acquisition of physical infrastructure and the hiring of human resources  Elaboration of national plans for monitoring  Capacity building in technologies for forest cover monitoring Monitoring of forest cover in the Amazon area

Regional Modelling Project Relevant Objectives:  Provide advanced training on spatial modelling for estimation of emissions baselines  Model a business-as-usual deforestation scenario in the Guiana Shield  Model a future scenario of the Guiana Shield in 2030 with REDD+ implementation Aim: Predict future deforestation and suggest strategies for avoiding deforestation and forest degradation in the Guiana Shield by modelling regional scenarios Time frame: Started 2012 Coordinator: Conservation International - Suriname (SR) Partners: Clark Labs (US), Imazon (BR), German Development Bank KfW (DE), Government of Suriname (SR)

SarVision Projects for the Guiana Shield Relevant projects:  Community empowerment for forest MRV in Guyana (2010-2012)  Forest cover map and biomass stratification in support of the government of Guyana (2009) and government of Suriname (2010-11)  New biomass mapping methods using advanced radar in Guyana (2009-2010)  Guyana case study: Biodiversity Mainstreaming through Avoided Deforestation (2008-2009)  Remote sensing research of tropical rainforests for development of satellite monitoring systems and advanced airborne radar survey, Guyana, Suriname and Colombia (1988-1995) Aim: Pioneer the operational application of systematic satellite and airborne monitoring and mapping systems for forest management in the Guiana Shield, and provide partners with the latest maps and updated information on changes in land and forest cover. Time frame: Active in region since 1980s Coordinator: SarVision (NL) Partners: Various governmental and NGO partners in the Guiana Shield for different projects
