1 31 Hazardous Materials: Personal Protective Equipment, Scene Safety, and Scene Control

2 31 Skill Drill 31-1 Donning a Level B Encapsulated Chemical- Protective Clothing Ensemble (1 of 4) 1. Pull on the suit to waist level; pull on the chemical boots. Pull the suit boot covers over the top of the boots. 2. Stand up and don SCBA and the SCBA face piece, but do not connect the regulator to the face piece.

Place both arms in the suit, pull the expanded back piece over the SCBA, and place the suit over the head. 6. Instruct the assistant to close the chemical suit by closing the zipper and sealing the splash flap.

6 31 Skill Drill 31-2 Doffing a Level B Encapsulated Chemical- Protective Clothing Ensemble (1 of 3) 1. Remove the hands and arms from the suit gloves and sleeves, and cross the arms in front inside the suit. 2. Instruct the assistant to open the chemical splash flap and open the suit zipper.

Instruct the assistant to roll the suit down and away from you until the suit is below waist level. 4. Sit and instruct the assistant to complete rolling down the suit and remove the outer boots and suit.

8 31 Skill Drill 31-2 Doffing a Level B Encapsulated Chemical- Protective Clothing Ensemble (3 of 3) 5. Stand and doff the SCBA. Keep the face piece in place while the SCBA frame is placed on the ground. 6. Take a deep breathe, doff the SCBA mask and walk away from the clean area.

Instruct the assistant to close the chemical suit. 4. Stand up and don SCBA and SCBA face piece. With assistance, pull the hood over your head and SCBA face piece.

11 31 Skill Drill 31-3 Donning a Level B Nonencapsulated Chemical-Protective Clothing Ensemble (3 of 3) 5. Place the helmet on your head. Instruct the assistant to connect the regulator to the SCBA face piece and ensure you have air flow.

12 31 Skill Drill 31-4 Doffing a Level B Nonencapsulated Chemical-Protective Clothing Ensemble (1 of 3) 1. Stand and doff the SCBA. The face piece should be kept in place while the frame is placed on the ground. 2. Instruct the assistant to open the chemical splash flap and suit zipper.

Sit down and instruct the assistant to complete rolling down the suit and remove the outer boots and suit.

14 31 Skill Drill 31-4 Doffing a Level B Nonencapsulated Chemical-Protective Clothing Ensemble (3 of 3) 5. Remove the SCBA face piece. Go to the rehabilitation area for medical monitoring, rehydration, and personal decontamination shower.

15 31 Skill Drill 31-5 Donning a Level C Chemical-Protective Clothing Ensemble (1 of 2) 1. Pull on the suit to waist level; pull on the chemical boots. Pull the suit boot covers over the top of the boots. 2. Place both arms in the suit and pull the suit over your shoulders. Have the assistant close the chemical suit.

16 31 Skill Drill 31-5 Donning a Level C Chemical-Protective Clothing Ensemble (2 of 2) 3. Don the inner gloves.4. Stand up and don the APR/PAPR and face piece. Pull the hood over the head and face piece. Place the helmet on your head.

17 31 Skill Drill 31-6 Doffing a Level C Chemical-Protective Clothing Ensemble The assistant opens the chemical splash flap and suit zipper. Remove your hands and arms from the gloves and sleeves. The assistant completes rolling down the suit and takes the outer boots and suit away. The assistant helps remove the inner gloves. Remove APR/PAPR.

18 31 Skill Drill 31-7 Donning a Level D Chemical-Protective Clothing Ensemble Conduct pre-entry briefing, medical monitoring, and equipment inspection. Don the Level D suit. Don boots. Don safety glasses or chemical goggles. Don a hard hat. Don gloves, a face shield, and any other required equipment.

19 31 Skill Drill 31-8 Doffing a Level D Chemical-Protective Clothing Ensemble (1 of 2) 1.After completing decontamination, proceed to the clean area for suit doffing. 2.Remove the gloves and hard hat. 3.Begin at the head and roll the suit down and away until the suit is below waist level. 4.Sit down. The assistant completes rolling down the suit and takes the boots and suit away.

20 31 Skill Drill 31-8 Doffing a Level D Chemical-Protective Clothing Ensemble (2 of 2) 5.Instruct the assistant to help remove the inner gloves. 6.Rotate on the bench to the direction that allows your feet to be placed on a dry, clean area. 7.Go to the rehabilitation area for medical monitoring and rehydration.
