Signals Refresher Training

S.O.C. Signals In this clinic, we will be reviewing the basic signal aspects we use on the S.O.C. We will be seeing various signal scenes on the layout. For each scene, we will be asking: –What is this signal aspect? What does it mean? –Where on the layout is this signal located?

What does this mean?

CLEAR Meaning: Proceed Allowed Speed: up to track speed Dwarf

What does this mean?

APPROACH Proceed, prepared to stop at the next signal.

What does this mean?

STOP Meaning: Stop Dwarf

And, this?

So, what does this mean?

CLEAR Meaning: Proceed

And, this?

APPROACH Proceed, prepared to stop at the next signal.

Here’s something new:

Dwarf RESTRICTING Proceed at restricted speed (15 MPH); prepared to stop short of train, obstruction or within one-half of range of visibility.

OK, now let’s look at the exit from a siding:

Mainline: CLEAR Siding: STOP The train crew needs to know which track they are on! Dwarf

Another aspect:

Mainline: STOP Siding: SLOW CLEAR Dwarf What does Slow Clear mean ?!?

SLOW CLEAR Proceed, at slow speed (15 MPH) within interlocking limits or through turnouts. Do not exceed 15 MPH until clear of interlocking or turnouts. Dwarf

And, related to Slow Clear is this signal:

SLOW APPROACH Proceed at slow speed (15 MPH) within interlocking limits or through turnouts, prepared to stop at next signal. Do not exceed 15 MPH. Dwarf Look! I’m Flashing!

But, what if you see this?

RESTRICTING Proceed at restricted speed (15 MPH); prepared to stop short of train, obstruction or within one-half of range of visibility. Dwarf Not Flashing!

And, what about this?

AND NOW... Some of the less-frequently seen signals:

What does this mean?

APPROACH MEDIUM Proceed, approaching the next signal at medium speed (30 MPH). Dwarf

And finally, how about this?

APPROACH SLOW Proceed, approaching the next signal at slow speed (15 MPH). Dwarf
