2.  Apartheid: The state of being apart.  The root of the conflict comes from early nineteenth century to the early 20 th century when there was segregation across the country, and laws and acts were put in place by the government that severely limited blacks, and other races, from participating in government, and other activities throughout the country.  After the election of 1948, where the main Afrikaner nationalist party, the Herenigde Nasionale Party (Reunited National Party), under the leadership of Protestant cleric Daniel Francois Malan campaigned on its policy of apartheid, Apartheid was officially a national policy.  By the early 1950s, many new laws were on the books making apartheid legal in many new ways. 3.  This discrimination takes the form of limiting the rights of races other than white by taking away their rights to: o Education o Government o Representation  Also, the Apartheid laws severely segregated races in where they lived, worked, and went to school. FORMS

4.  While segregation existed in other forms around the world in the early 19 th century, and before, many countries abolished laws favoring one race by mid century. By 1994, South Africa was one of only a handful of nations with segregation laws still on the books. SPREAD

5.  While segregation had been occurring for hundreds of years, Apartheid was official national policy from 1948 to 1994, when Nelson Mandela was elected president of the country.  Between 1948 and 1994, 12,000,000 and 40,000,000 South Africans were affected by this after living under it. 6.  Global- Segragation and other national policies that discriminate were common in many governments around the world. Ex. The United States Jim Crow Laws.  Regional- There were thirteen different states based on a person race.  Local- In South Africa, some towns segregated residential areas. GLOBAL, REGIONAL, AND LOCAL SCALE
