2 The Waterloo Collegiate English Department presents the Grade 11 University Level English Examination (Eng 3UI) Mrs. Cunningham, Mrs. Klassen, Mrs. Urquhart, and Mr. Latour Time: 1.5 hours Page: 1 of 2 General Instructions: 1. Answer on the foolscap provided. Write on one side of the page only in blue or black pen. 2. Number and initial all foolscap pages. 3. Complete the attached outline before beginning. 4. Marks will be awarded for planning, clear argument with supporting evidence, accuracy in spelling and sentence structure, and use of three required works. 5. A two sided 8” X11” sheet with hand written quotations only, from major works studied in class, is permitted. 6. Manage your time carefully: outline (10 minutes); essay (70 minutes); editing (10 minutes).

3 Essay Instructions: Write a formal essay in which you use ONE of the quotations from the selection below to support your argument. You must use Macbeth and one of The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, The Kite Runner, Lullabies of Little Criminals, The Colour Purple, The Great Gatsby, The Alchemist, or Lovely Bones; use a documentary film, short story or poem, as approved by your instructor, for the third paragraph. Choice 1:“I can’t wait for my last opportunity to shine” Choice 2:“Whoppie…it’s almost the summer. So I better finish the year really strong.” 15 Points: Essay Outline 85 Points: Essay Total:______/100 Points

4 Please be Aware You cannot pass this essay if you do not cite directly quoted support from your texts You will receive a zero if you do not hand in your cheat sheet with your essay TRUST that your ideas are as incredible as anyone else's and avoid risking plagiarism by coming to your own conclusions and not paraphrasing from the internet

5 Tips for Success Practice mapping out the flow of your essay before your exam Don’t underestimate the importance of a well- drawn outline. Not only is it worth 15 pts, but it will help you clarify your ideas Get a good sleep before coming to the exam! Studies prove that a hazy mind will slow down your processing and writing speed

6 The Cheat (Quotation) Sheet 8.5 X 11 letter sheet ONLY hand written quotations Titles of text and themes ONLY as headlines Citation on your cheat sheet – not on the essay Record citation information correctly Can include the speaker of the quote (but not any context) i.e.: Macbeth- “ NO OTHER WRITING OR NOTES ALLOWED

9 The Outline You must write out your thesis statement with reference to your three supporting arguments You should not re-write your quotations, only include your main points You must use at least three points for each body paragraph on your outline (you do not have to fill in every bullet point)
