1 Becoming Baby- Friendly in Oklahoma Pioneer Group First Steps

2 BBFOK Goals Increase number of Oklahoma birthing hospitals that are Baby-Friendly designated –Current tally = 1 Recruit 10 hospitals per year to participate –Pioneer group in recruitment Implement at least 4 of the 10 steps in first year of each group Host annual statewide Baby-Friendly Summit

3 BBFOK Resources Hospital Breastfeeding Education project –Making Breastfeeding Easier classes –Train-the-trainer skills labs –Physician CMEs –Presentations for hospital leadership Website: www.oumedicine.com/breastfeeding –Resources for hospitals –Baby-Friendly section Model hospital policies

4 BBFOK Resources Baby-Friendly curriculum for staff training –To be available January 2014 –Online, FREE –15 contact hours –Will meet the required didactic training –Hospitals will need to do the clinical competency validation elements

5 BBFOK Resources Sample CEO letter Sample mother survey Other sample hospital policies DVDs on skin to skin contact Lactation textbook Sample physician handbook

6 BBFOK Support Initial in-person group meeting Monthly conference calls or webinars Technical assistance as needed –E.g. review of policy Site visits with hospital task force Mock surveys prior to assessment Funding

7 BBFOK Summit Friday, February 28, 2014 Samis Education Center, OUHSC campus Speakers: –Clifton Kenon, DNP, MSN, IBCLC, MCH Consultant for Office on Women’s Health/Indian Health Service –Dr. Anne Merewood, Editor of Journal of Human Lactation and BBFOK consultant –Becky Mannel, BBFOK project lead

8 Pioneer Group Receive $500 stipend AFTER: –Attending Pioneer group meeting –Completing self-assessment from BFUSA –Submitting signed CEO letters 1 for BFUSA 1 for BBFOK –Registering for Baby-Friendly Discovery phase

9 Pioneer Group January 2014: –Enroll in Baby-Friendly Development phase Focus on: –Policy Development –Staff training –Patient education –Implement data monitoring Any breastfeeding Exclusive breastfeeding at discharge (TJC core measure) Skin to skin, staff education

10 Pioneer Group Send team to February 28 BBFOK Summit Receive $250 stipend after attending January 2014- July 2015 –Complete Development phase; receive up to $3000 upon verification –Complete Dissemination phase: receive up to $3000 upon verification

11 Pioneer Group July – December 2015 –Prepare for Designation –Schedule BFUSA phone assessment –Schedule mock surveys –Schedule onsite assessment

12 Pioneer Group Achieve designation! –Receive reimbursement of final fee –Have a party –Submit a news release –Post on website –Inform providers and patients
