Then, copy and answer the questions. Great Britain had colonies in North America for more than 150 years. During that time the colonists had considerable (a lot) experience governing themselves. 1)Why did the colonists have the rights of Englishmen? 2)How did the British government try to tighten control of the colonists?

WOW (under RAP) Lesson 10 The States Govern Themselves Date During the Revolutionary War individual states began writing their own constitutions. What might be a problem with this? -After the Declaration of Independence was signed the colonies became states and were free and independent. -each state had to create their own government. -protect their basic rights -promote common good -used ideas learned from political philosophy and their own experiences with colonial and British government.

WOW (under RAP) Lesson 10 The States Govern Themselves Date Legislative branch had too much power -State governments did not protect property rights of all -Groups of citizens called factions, accused of making laws to benefit themselves not the common good. -Factions cancelled debts and made paper money -This helped those who owed money but hurt the lenders -Taxed people far more than the British had -New laws were interfering with private lives -Laws told people what to eat, drink, wear, and believe
