WATER FILTRATION SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION… MRS. T. SEYMORE SCIENCE PERIOD 5 TITLE PAGE

PROBLEM Are some minerals in water too big to be filtered out? Are pathogens completely removed after filtering water?

HYPOTHESIS I hypothesize that …… (An educated explanation that can be tested.)

RESEARCH 3 – 5 SLIDES Information about: -Contents in water -Pathogens in water -Minerals in water -Good & bad contents in water -Most important materials that needs to be removed from the water.

HARDNESS The amount of calcium and magnesium that is dissolved in waters result in the hardness of the water. To have hard water, this affects your health, the taste of certain foods or liquids that contain hard water. According to the ND Health article, most people prefers soften water because hard water requires more soap for effective cleansing, forms scum and curd, causes yellowing of fabrics, toughens vegetables during cooking, and forms scales in boilers, hot water heaters, pipes, and on cooking utensils.

MINERALS IN WATER The minerals that exist in water are mag., chlorine, calcium, flouride, etc. These minerals are both good and bad. Magnesium Chlorine Calcium Flouride

THE MOST DANGEROUS MATERIAL IN WATER… E. COLI

MATERIALS NEEDED… List your materials

PROCEDURES “CREATING A WATER FILTER” First: 1. 2. 3. First, collect soil.

PERFORM EXPERIMENT… INDEPENDENT VARIABLE What is the independent variable of this experiment? DEPENDENT VARIABLE What is the dependent variable of this experiment?

OBSERVATION -Graph -Pictures (you performing experiment) -Table -Chart -Summary explaining what happened during the experiment. Data collected

CONCLUSION Explain the process of filtering water. Does you experiment support or not support your hypothesis?
