Parts of a Lab 10/15/2012 pages 29-30 Know: What are the parts of a lab?

Information Clarifying ?s Testable Question- Question which builds the lab What happens to macroinvertebrates when the water temperature decreases? Hypothesis- Predicting what may happen **Must be stated as “If…then…because…” If the water temp decreases, then the number of macroinvertebrates will decrease because they cannot survive in cold water. 1. Begin w/ testable question 2. Formulate hypothesis

Information Clarifying ?s a) Manipulated Variable (Independent)- variable you change “IF” part of the hypothesis. If the water temp decreases… b) Responding Variable (Dependent)- variable you measure or observe “THEN” part of the hypothesis. …then the number of macroinvertebrates will decrease… 3. Design lab & choose variables

Information Clarifying ?s -Decide what will be necessary to conduct the experiment and write out a list of materials. 3 Buckets, water, 1500 macros (500/bucket), thermometer, ice, heater -Write detailed step-by-step instructions for others who might duplicate the lab. 1. Fill each bucket with water 2. Add 500 macros to each bucket 3. Add ice to one bucket…etc, etc -Repeat Steps 1-? to verify validity. 4. Materials 5. Procedure

Information Clarifying ?s Data- facts, figures and other evidence gathered through making observations -Analyze the data using tables or graphs to see if there are patterns (See examples of tables and graphs) 6. Begin lab, collect and analyze data

Water Temp (°C)# Macroinvertebrates 16390 13450 10475 Table 1. Number of macroinvertebrates. Tables and Graphs Example 2.

Graph 1. Number of macroinvertebrates. X axis Y axis Responding/Dependent Variable (Then) Manipulated/Independent Variable (If)

Information Clarifying ?s Conclusion- a statement that sums up and explains what you have learned from a lab. -Does your data support your hypothesis? -Using your data table, add to your conclusion the high & low data points. Include the amount of increase/decrease. 7. Make Conclusions/ Explanations

Information Clarifying ?s The hypothesis (was) was not supported based on the following data 16°C= 390 macros, 13°C= 450 macros and 10°C= 475 macros. The macros increased by 85. This could be due to macros cannot survive in hot water. Final conclusion

Evidence  Think about the macroinvertebrate data we and Mrs. Graves’ classes will collect over the year.  Come up with the following: Testable Question Hypothesis *remember- “If…then…because…” Summary
