Lecture 11 Spreading

Spreading… 1. Shade sequence / Shade Card 2. Correct ply direction 3. Alignment of plies 4. Correct Ply tension 5. Fabric faults 6. Static Charges 7. Distortion of spread 8. Fusion of plies

2- Ply direction…  Symmetric fabric –The fabrics which are same on both the sides  Asymmetric fabric –Different face and back sides  Directional fabrics –Fabrics are same from end to end  Non-directional fabrics –Fabrics are different from end to end

Spreading Types 1. Face-up and Nape one way 2. Face-up and Nape either way 3. Face to face and Nape one way 4. Face to face and Nape either way

3- Alignment of plies  The plies should properly be aligned both length and width wise  Stripers / check fabrics are the biggest challenge  Spikes may be used

4- Correct ply tension  Tension during spreading should be correct.  Less tension means irregular fullness  More tension means tightness which finally result in contracted fabric pieces in sewing

5- Fabric Faults  Fabric faults should be eliminated during spreading  Splice Mark  Pair backing

6- Static Charges  In synthetic materials, Static charges may develop due to the friction of fabric to the machine parts  Change the way of fabric through machine  Increase humidity  Earth the lay

7- Distortion of spread  During manual cutting, the spread may be distorted due to the base plate of the cutter  Glazed paper is used to avoid it

8- Fusion of plies  Edges of fabrics (thermoplastic) may be fused together during cutting due to the heated blade of cutter  Anti-fusion paper may be used to avoid fusion
