January 24, 2014 Lesson on: Hot arid environments Key questions: 1.What are arid environments? 2.Where are arid environments located? 3.What is the climate like in arid environments? Dwight Sutherland 2014

How are these two images different? Dwight Sutherland 2014 Arid environment which is a place that receives less than 250mm of precipitation per year. Semi-arid environment which is a place that receives between 250- 500mm of precipitation per year. One is a hot arid environment and the other is a semi-arid environment

Koppen Climate Classification: The Koppen classification classify climate regions according to the temperature and precipitation levels of a region. See climate classifications below. Dwight Sutherland 2014 Koppen Climate Classification of climate types

A more detailed example of Koppen’s classification Dwight Sutherland 2014

Where are hot arid regions? TASK : Describe the distribution of hot arid environments. Use coordinates such as continents, compass points, countries, latitude position, nearby oceans etc. Hot arid and semi arid regions according to the Koppen Classification. The Koppen classification classify climate regions according to temperature and precipitation

TASK: Use the climate charts of the Sahara Desert and Birdsville to describe how the temperature and rainfall changes throughout the year both places. Dwight Sutherland 2014 Sahara Desert – A hot arid environment

Sahara Desert Dwight Sutherland 2014

Birdsville, Queensland Australia Dwight Sutherland 2014

Birdsville, Queensland Australia Dwight Sutherland 2014

Another way arid regions are classified is by the index of aridity. TASK: Read through the handout on the Index of Aridity. Desert the aridity index and say how it links with the rest of our learning. Key ideas to include: Aridity (level of moisture) Potential evapo-transpiration (PET) Precipitation Dwight Sutherland 2014

Lesson summary TASK: Summarise your learning on arid regions. Include something on: Geographic location Climate Definition Aridity Dwight Sutherland 2014
