Cloud Computing at GES DISC Presented by: Long Pham Contributors: Aijun Chen, Bruce Vollmer, Ed Esfandiari and Mike Theobald GES DISC UWG May 11, 2011

Computing where services and storage are on-demand and provided by the internet (the cloud) Three basic types of cloud computing 1.Software as a Service (SaaS) - traditional applications through the web browser with no client to install; most widely use service i.e. Gmail, Yahoo 2.Platform as a Service (PaaS) - virtualized servers on which users can run existing applications without the worries of OS, CPU load balancing, etc. i.e. Microsoft Azure, Google App Engine, Rackspace 3.Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) - using clusters, servers, storages and networks as a service to provide a whole data center i.e. Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), NASA Nebula Cloud What is Cloud Computing? SaaS PaaS IaaS

Generate and prototype an application using NASA Nebula IaaS Test the system demand for our current applications Understand the effort behind cloud computing –How to setup an instance… –Understand Nebula’s capabilities… –Pros and cons Evaluate Nebula cloud versus other cost saving solution Cloud Prototype Objectives

Currently, the status of Nebula Cloud Prototype includes: –Ported S4PM into Nebula instance and tested S4PM samples –AIRS PREPQC (AIRS simple algorithm) installed and tested in Nebula –Installed and tested AIRS L2 PGE in the cloud –Preliminary comparison of AIRS PGE in the cloud against local AIRS PGE Nebula Cloud Prototype Status

Preliminary Result (Two-day AIRS L1 data processing)

Upcoming implementation includes: –Install and test AIRS L1 algorithm –Chain AIRS L1 and L2 –Collect I/O, speed and disk utilization metrics –Determine cost model (cloud vs. in-house HW) –Utilize Nebula Object Store to allow larger and faster cloud storage (still waiting from Nebula developers) –Giovanni 4 prototype in the cloud –Documenting results Nebula Cloud Prototype Status
