2 OL Agenda for October 17, 2012 Warm Up: Review subordinate clauses, sentence structure, relative pronouns, and subordinating conjunctions. Check workbook pages 148-152. Read Invictus with Thinking Notes. Holocaust in Rwanda and Darfu and A Meaningful Life (Pages 156-163) What fell clutch of circumstance did each person face? How did each person master their fates and become the caption of their souls?

3 Subordinate (Dependent) Clause What is it? A group of words containing a subject and a verb, but NOT able to express a complete thought. Why cant it express a complete thought? The clause begins with a signal word that hinders its ability to convey a complete idea. What are the two types of signal words? Subordinating Conjunctions and Relative Pronouns

4 Subordinate (Dependent) Clause What sentence structures contain a subordinate clause? Complex or compound- complex sentences contain at least one subordinate clause.

5 Subordinating Conjunctions What are the subordinating conjunctions? Aaawwubuss. There is a list on page 154 of your Grammar for Writing workbook. What type of subordinate clause usually begins with a subordinating conjunction? Adverb clauses. These clauses answer How? When? Where? To What Extent? Why? Under what condition? They modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.

6 What are Relative Pronouns What are the relative pronouns? The most common are Who, Whom, Whose, Which, and That. Sometimes When, Where, and Why are relative pronouns. What type of subordinate clause usually begins with a relative pronoun? Noun or adjective clauses. Adjective clauses answer Which One? What Kind? How Many? How Much? They modify nouns and pronouns Noun clauses do the same jobs nouns and pronouns do in a sentence.
