AAU IS… The AAU is one of the largest non-profit volunteer organizations in the United States dedicated solely to the promotion and development of amateur sports. It was established in 1888 by sports leaders who collectively became the first to define amateurism and create standards for amateur athletes in the country. The AAU continues to operate on the basic principles upon which the organization was founded: to maintain the mutual interests of its members while achieving and improving amateur sports.

AAU IS… The AAU offers National Championships in the various sports, sponsors the AAU JR. Olympic Games, the AAU James E. Sullivan Memorial Award along with the AAU Complete Athlete Program. Two of the AAUs flagship programs, which are administered for the Presidents Council on Physical Fitness and Sports are the Presidents Challenge and the Presidential Sports Award.

AAU Corporate Financial Picture The Amateur Athletic Union of the United States, Inc. was formed in 1888 and recognized as a 501(c) 3 non-profit, tax-exempt entity by the IRS in 1966. The AAU has an annual operating budget of over fifteen million dollars. Direct oversight of this budget is the responsibility of the elected National Treasurer, appointed Finance Chairman, and a thirty member Finance Committee. General supervision and control of this budget is the responsibility of the Board of Director and the AAU Congress, which is a body of 600 members. The AAU receives its primary funding from annual membership dues, sports event operations, and merchandising. The AAU is one of the few non-profit sports organizations successfully operating a financial surplus during the past several years. In addition, the AAU is a multi-level organization, and when all of its affiliated organizations are taken into consideration, the total budget exceeds one billion dollars. Many of these affiliates obtain 501(c)3 status through the AAUs group exemption, but maintain their own financial responsibility and records.

AAU Corporate Financial Picture The AAU engages the services of a certified public accountant each year to audit its financial statements and suggest improvements in internal control policies. Last year BKD, LLP performed the annual audit. Furthermore, the AAU engages the services of Morgan Stanley to manage its multi-million dollar portfolio. Morgan Stanley maintains a copy of the AAUs Investment Policy and adheres to these investment guidelines. The AAU and Walt Disney Company have partnered together in a thirty year agreement. The Amateur Athletic Unions financial stability and sound financial control was one aspect that attracted the Walt Disney Company. In an effort to maintain its financial stability, control and independence, all corporate sponsorship dollars are put back into funding AAU programs and are not utilized for general operations. AAU Corporate Sponsors include Dr. Pepper, Eastbay, Nike, NFL Youth Football Fund, MidWest Trophy, ESPN the Magazine, Rawlings, McDavid, Tachikara, and New Balance.

AAU Corporate Financial Picture Furthermore, the AAU is recognized by several leading sports organizations as a leader in the Sports Industry for financial control and management. The AAU was the first in sports industry to offer online membership registration. Today over 75% of AAU members register via the internet, thus providing a financially safe, secure, and efficient method for transacting business. The AAU understands the ever expanding opportunities of the internet, which has enabled us to begin our reach in the global market.
