5 Eight Centuries of History

6 The University of Padua traces its origins back to 1222 when a group of law students migrated spontaneously from Bologna to Padua, forming a free association organised into nationes according to their geographic origins. The motto “Universa Universis Patavina Libertas” – ‘complete liberty for all at the University of Padua’ – underlines the total freedom of thought that the university has always granted its teachers and its students alike. This same freedom of thought attracted illustrious scientists to Padua. Eight Centuries of History

7 In the field of medicine, Gian Battista Da Monte was the first in Europe to teach clinical medicine at the patient’s bedside and William Harvey discovered the secrets of blood circulation. In the field of astronomy, figures of note include Copernicus, father of our present understanding of the universe, and Galileo Galilei, who worked at Padua from 1592 to 1610 and found here the ideal conditions for his observations. The University of Padua has also distinguished itself in the area of equal opportunities: the first woman in the world to obtain a degree, Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia, studied and graduated here in 1678. 25 «For the great desire I had to see fair Padua, nursery of arts, I am arrived… and am to Padua come, as he that leaves a shallow plash to plunge in the deep, and with satiety seeks to quench his thirst.» (William Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew) “Allowing that the honour of being home to the scientific revolution might be said to belong to one single place, that place is Padua.” (H.Butterfield, Harvard University, 1958)
