2 To Receive the Word, We Must Put Away Error
(Jas 1:21) “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness” Filthiness means dirty – things that are impure Used in Jas 2:2 Puts me in mind of the change of clothes given to Joshua: (Zech 3:1-5) Christian that receives the word puts evil aside from them – Beginning at the new birth (Phil 3:4-7)

3 To Receive the Word, We Must Display Meekness
(Jas 1:21) “…receive with meekness the engrafted word” Meekness opposes superfluity of naughtiness (Jas 1:19-20) “ 19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 For the wrath of man works not the righteousness of God.” We must be self-denying (Matt 7:21) “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven.”

4 To Receive the Word, We Must Display Meekness
Paul recognized this truth with the Thessalonians: (1 Thess 2:13) “For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually works also in you that believe.” Must acknowledge that we need God's direction: (Jer 10:23) “O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walks to direct his steps.” (Psa 119:105) “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

5 To Receive the Word, We Must Realize its Power
(Jas 1:21) “…receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.” Engrafted or Implanted means that the word of God is like a seed (Lk 8:11) The seed has the power to produce life: (1 Peter 1:22-25) “ 22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abides for ever. 24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower thereof falls away: 25 But the word of the Lord endures for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”

6 To Receive the Word, We Must Realize its Power
It is a God-willed birth: (Jas 1:18) “Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first- fruits of his creatures. ” (Jn 1:12-13) “ 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

7 To Receive the Word, We Must Put the Word in Practice
(Jas 1:22) “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” Look at an example of doers (Acts 2:36-47) Accepted it (vs 37) Obeyed it (vs 41) Continued in it (vs 42) Receiving it saved their souls (vs 40) Receiving it placed them in God's church (vs 47)

8 Conclusion (Jas 1:25) “But whoso looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” Blessing are for those who truly receive God's word! Blessing of forgiven sins Blessing of answered prayers Blessing of eternal life Can you claim these blessings? Have you truly received God's word?
