3  We will learn about each culture, what they looked like, why they came here and how they lived.  New vocabulary  Discuss the cooperation and conflicts of the “salt people” and the Lenape.  Get a full outline of the unit’s expectations.  You will need to take notes at the end of the presentation. Please take out your notebooks to prepare.

4 The people of NJ  The first Natives came across the Bering Strait from Asia. They probably followed herds of animals that they hunted for food.

5 How they lived  They began as nomads. Nomads are people who move often to follow food.  They some people began agriculture. Agriculture is planting and growing crops

6 Lenni Who???  These nomads eventually settled in NJ. They called themselves Lenni Lanape or Ordinary People.  They lived along the Delaware River Valley. There were three main groups of Lenape, each with their own version of Algonquian

7 The Culture of the Lenape  Each tribe had their own chief or sachem.  Chief Oratam’s story  Lenape had a matrilineage or privilege and land was passed down from the mother’s side of the family.

8 Lenni Lenape Life  Wigwam  Long house  The summer home  Deer skin  Decorated with feathers, beads, wampum and shells. Party and good times (manetuwak)

13 Winds of change  The first Europeans came to American seeking a Northwest passage.  Why?

14 Dutch and Swedes  The region now called NJ was broken into two large sections the New Netherlands and New Sweden. Trade began happening between these countries and the settlers.  Trading and fighting for land began between Sweden, the Dutch and the natives.  The English came to America for religious freedom.  The Quakers were one group from England that settled in NJ. They demanded freedom of religion or tolerance as well as fair trial rights.  Other settlers came from Scotland

15 The Clash of Cultures  The first conflicts between the Dutch and Lenape or Delaware.  Land  Farming differences  Treaties mistreat the Lenape
