The Lenni Lenape were the first Indians, also called the Delaware Indians. They lived in villages that had 100-200 people. In the winter they had longhouses, the summer wigwams. In the summer women planted crops, and gathered wild berries and nuts. The men fished and hunted. Land was very important but they believed it couldn’t be owned and had no problem sharing with early settlers.

Dutch were the first Europeans to settle along the Delaware river. Dutch started a village in 1631 that lasted less than a year because Indians killed settlers and burnt down the village. Hudson claimed land for Dutch in 1609. Sweden next attempted Delaware. Queen Christina sent Peter Minuit to claim Delaware. The Swedish built Fort Christina where they grew tobacco.

Colonists sold tobacco with the Lenni Lenape for beaver furs. Dutch took land back and then were forced to give it up to the English or there would be a war. They chose to give up land. The queen was only 12 years old when the colony started! At the time, many colonists wanted Delaware. Eventually it will become Britain.

The Colony showed Culture. Dutch had step roofs and windows. Dutch started Christmas traditions. Swedish were the first people to decorate Christmas trees in America. Women and Men Responsibilities. Woman cooked and cleaned and also made clothing. Men built homes, farmed and hunted. Most children didn’t go to school. Children weeded gardens and cared for farm animals.

Some colonists planted trees and the raised livestock. Farmers grew wheat, beans, tobacco, oats, and peas. People from Sweden, Finland, and the Netherlands brought culture. The large bay and fertile land brought trade to Delaware. Families worked hard together to survive.

Finding workers… Apprentices- Worked for master craftsmen for free and learned the skill. Indentured Servants- Settlers paid for their trip. In return they owned them. Slavery- Slaves were brought from the Caribbean. When the Dutch took over they brought more. Slaves worked all their lives!!!

Trading was an important part of colonial life. Delaware had many exports they traded. A flour industry developed and flour mills were built. Wilmington Delaware became a major flour mill center. They also had forests were they grew walnut, oak and cedar trees. Craftsmen built furniture, carpenters cut shingles, colonists turned wood into paper and lots of trade industry began.

When English took over, colonists had religious freedom. William Penn thought people should worship as the pleased. Catholics, Lutherans, and Mennonites went to Church. Later, the Dutch reformed Church became the official church.

Most early settlers were Swedish Lutherans. Delaware was part of Pennsylvania until the Revolutionary War. Delaware representatives usually lost because there were few of them and they disagreed. William Penn gave the right to make their own laws and in 1704 the elected an assembly.

In 1774 colonists sent representatives to the continental congress. The Continental Congress voted on independence. The three representatives from Delaware were supposed to vote but only two were there. They voted opposite and so the other man had to come back and vote for independence making every colony’s vote independence.
