IDC HPC Market Update

HPC: Strong Growth Since 2002 HPC hit an all-time high of $11.5 billion in 2007 19% CAGR in server factory revenue over last 4 years Clusters continue to gain shares across all segments

New Approach For Competitive Segments (2007 Data) Departmental ($250K - $50K) $4.2B Divisional ($250K - $500K) $1.8B Supercomputers (Over $500K) $3.0B Workgroup (under $100K) $2.6B HPC Servers $11.5B

HPC Revenue by New Competitive Segments

Vendor Shares in 2007

Total HPC Revenue by Processor Type X86 based systems took a 72% share in 2007!

Total HPC Revenue by OS Linux systems accounted for 74% of the total revenue in 2007!

HPC Technical Computing Compared To All Other Servers

HPC Compares to All Servers

Why Has Technical Computing Grown So Quickly? 1.Price and price/peak performance of clusters has redefined the cost of technical computing –>6x better than RISC, >70x better than vectors 2.At the same time, live science and live engineering costs have escalated –Plus time-to-solution is months faster with simulations 3.Global competitiveness is driving R&D and better product designs -- Even for SMBs 4.At the same time, x86 performance on many technical applications is weaker than RISC or vectors –Driving buyers to purchase a larger number of processors 5.New materials and approaches require rewriting the books and tables which takes years – making simulations a faster solution –e.g. nano technologies, new metals/plastics/composites –e.g. use of multidisciplinary physics and combined analysis

New HPC Research Areas Extreme Computing Adding performance and price/performance to Qview New end-user Qview Workgroup MCS Market share by application/industry HPC Storage special analysis report series Data Center assessment and benchmarking
