2. Education Charlemagne could not himself read or write. He did not want this to happen to other people, so he built schools and churches so that his subjects could learn proper education. The peasants did learn and the entire northern Europe began to improve because of all of the (relatively) smart people.

3. The Power of The Church Charlemagne killed thousands of people who did not convert to Christianity and required a tax to be paid to the church. Church officials were more educated than normal people due to more training at the church. This allowed them to influence peasants to convert and indeed more people signed up. The church was a place of solidarity in the time of the Dark Ages.
