Heroes Objectives: Explore the concept of a hero. Understand the qualities of a hero. Prepare a GCSE S&L presentation entitled ‘My Hero’.

Big Picture 1.Listen to some music & think about HEROIC qualities. 2.Watch a film clip about HEROES. 3.Discuss some well known HEROES. 4.Look at the objectives for GCSE speaking & listening assessment.

Listen… Now listen to the piece of music. As you listen, try to write down as many qualities of a HERO as you can. What makes someone heroic? Heroes

Watch Watch the following film clip. List the names of as many HEROES as you can think of; these might be from sports, screen, war, religious leaders etc. e.g. Superman

My Hero You must now plan a Speaking and Listening presentation about your own personal HERO. This might be someone well known or a friend or family member who you believe possesses HEROIC qualities. Your presentation must last around 4-5 minutes and include a PowerPoint presentation.

S&L – How to get a… …Level 6 Pupils adapt their talk to the demands of different contexts with increasing confidence. Their talk engages the interest of the listener through the variety of its vocabulary and expression. Pupils take an active part in discussion, showing understanding of ideas and sensitivity to others. They are usually fluent in their use of standard English in formal situations. …Level 7 Pupils are confident in matching their talk to the demands of different contexts. They use vocabulary precisely and organise their talk to communicate clearly. In discussion, pupils make significant contributions, evaluating others' ideas and varying how and when they participate. They show confident use of standard English in situations that require it.

What to include… 1.Who is your Hero? This might be someone famous or personal to you e.g. a family member. 2.Biographical details (i.e. background information – where they were born; how they developed particular skills or talents etc.) 3.What makes them HEROIC? What do you admire about them? What makes them special? 4.Anecdotes – a story about something this person has done. 5.You could also include, music, video footage and photographs to add interest to your presentation. How about a quiz at the end to make sure everyone was listening?
