Terfenol-D By: Sydney Dacus
2
TYPE OF ALLOY Terfenol-D is a alloy. SUBSTITUTIONAL
3
ELEMENTS Terfenol-D is made up of terbium (Tb), Dysprosium (Dy), and Iron (Fe). 10% Tb 23.33% Dy 66.67% Fe
4
WHY ARE THESE METALS IN TERFENOL-D
Terfenol-D is made up of Tb, Dy, and Fe because of their magnetostrictive properties. This means that they allow magnetic materials to change their shape, whether it’s expanding or contracting, during magnetization. They allow Terfenol-D to have the highest magnetostriction of any other alloy.
5
USES Due to its magnetostrictive properties, Terfenol-D is used in many naval sonar systems. The alloy can reach great ocean depths, which is useful for exploration. It can also be used as an acoustic transducer in high temperature and pressure environment, such as oil holes.
