Consulting 101: What do firms look for in candidates?
Resume Cover Letter Make sure it looks professional – feel free to use Wharton format (PBG has template) Must keep it short, e.g. 1 page Less can be more Your info and accomplishments should be in consulting-ese – use consulting buzz words Talk about impact of your accomplishments, and quantify whenever possible Some places accept CV SCOPE AND IMPACT Look for examples of these to use as templates In general, do these things: Express interest in firm and position Show you’ve done your homework by referencing research and conversations Give a brief description of why you’re qualified, and feel free to select some stories from your resume to do it Add to your resume’s narrative Don’t do these things: Repeat your resume Use the same cover letter for multiple places Write the wrong name Can be a great avenue to differentiate yourself as a credible candidate
18
Consulting 101: What is the interview process for consulting?
Meet & Greet The Fit The Case Wrap-up 0:00 0:15 0:40 Process Wait in hospitality suite with other candidates & recruiters Interviewer asks for you by name and you proceed to the interview suite together ~15 min Interviewer may give personal background Questions about resume & experience (personal and professional experiences) ~25 min Interviewer will start the case Case is often based on work the interviewer did previously May not receive much information to begin ~5 min Your chance to ask questions Walk back to hospitality suite with interviewer Your role Take the time to read your interviewer’s bio – any useful information for a Q&A session later Appear warm, confident, professional Be able to clearly tell “your story” Highlight the strengths of your previous work experience that relay why you’re a good fit for the firm/consulting Pass the “fit” test Keep track of time so that you analyze the info/data to make a recommendation by the conclusion Be natural! Maintain confidence, controlled, upbeat demeanor Don’t ask stock questions A good chance to get to learn about the interviewer’s personal experiences at the firm
