________________________________ (the must haves…) ___________________________________________________ The Introduction Paragraph What is an Essay Hook? “An essay hook is 1-2 opening sentences of your paper. They serve to capture readers’ attention and help them decide if they want to continue reading your text. A Hook or Grabber We call it a “hook” because it reminds us of a shiny lure that fishermen use to catch a fish. And, depending on the fish they want to catch, they will use different hooks. An important thing to remember is that a hook isn’t the entire introduction, or a replacement for it. It is a part of your introduction, the opening lines of it.

8 Essay Organization The Introduction Paragraph
________________________________ (the must haves…) ___________________________________________________ _ The Introduction Paragraph "Her heart held the greatest power ever known” (Moana). When a person thinks of the definition of a superhero, one normally thinks of superpowers like flying or super physical strength. What if a hero’s strength comes from within? What truly defines a hero? A Hook or Grabber According to Joseph Campbell, a hero is defined through a literary journey that is structured in five major steps: the departure, the initiation, the road of trials, the innermost cave and the return. Following a structure to write a story or movie, helps grow a character through conflict and can teach the reader or viewer a lesson to become a better person. In order for a character to be the hero we desire, they do not always need superpowers; they just need to walk the path of the hero’s journey. In the movie Moana, as the future leader of her island’s tribe, Moana is a 16-year-old girl that embarks on a journey to discover her inner hero’s heart.   General Information Thesis Statement Therefore…. 9 Essay Organization Body Paragraphs:
Moana’s first step of the hero’s journey is the departure. In the departure, a hero must leave their home and go to an unknown or new world. For Moana, this is when she leaves her island, and travels beyond the reef out into the unknown ocean. This is important because she shows she is persistent and brave to start her journey. According to Campbell, a hero must also have a trigger or event that pushes him or her into their journey. For Moana, her trigger is when the island begins to die. It must be saved! This is important because, as the future leader of the island, Moana needs to make sure her people survive and can live on the island. The final part of the departure phase in the hero’s journey is for the Moana to answer the call to action. In the movie, the ocean calls to her. Moana even sings, “see the line where the sky meets the sea, it calls me”. The ocean gives her the heart pebble and calls her to voyage out to save her island. Moana answers this call and begins her hero’s journey. Body Paragraph 1: (Step 1) ________________________________ ___________________________________________________ Body Paragraphs: Start with a topic sentence to introduce the step Define the step “Cite” or have a specific example from the movie (text) Explain why that example illustrates the defined step

10 Essay Organization X Y Z Conclusion outline The Conclusion Paragraph:
· Topic sentence: Þ Fresh rephrasing of thesis statement The Conclusion: (Wrap it all up!) ________________________________ ___________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ The Conclusion Paragraph: Y · Supporting sentences: Þ Summarize or wrap up the main points in the body of the essay. Þ Explain how ideas fit together X –  Explain the thesis again. FRAMING EXAMPLE Thesis Statement: Internet access should be limited during the school day. Hook: Quicksand is defined as “an area where fine sand, silt, or clay floats on water. These sand, clay, and silt particles are interspersed with the water molecules, creating a weak bond that holds it all together,” according to How Stuff Works (Bonsor). When people step into quicksand, the weak bonds break, and their movements while trying to escape cause them to sink deeper into the trap, much like an early exposure to the Internet can lead to addiction and obsession. Zinger: Like quicksand, the Internet ensnares students before they even know what has happened. Once submerged, teenagers often can’t escape. Because the addictive clutches of the Internet can suck students in before they are able to defend themselves, adults should set healthy boundaries to guard teenagers against the fearsome and compelling force. In this example, the writer links the idea of quicksand and the Internet in both the introduction and the conclusion. That’s the goal. End where you start, but do it in a way that readers will remember. Teach students to add drama (but not too much), and appeal to readers’ emotions in order to create a lasting effect. And those are some of my best tips for teaching conclusion paragraphs. Scaffolding is an important piece to supporting struggling writers. When students are ready to be released from the scaffolded elements, we peel them back and let them wow us with their skills. Until then, our goal is to create lessons students will remember and skills they will use to be successful after they walk out of our classroom. From: Y –  State WHY the audience should care. Z · Closing sentence Þ Final words Þ Connects back to the introduction Z –  Zing readers with a lasting thought. End where you start, but do it in a way that readers will remember. Appeal to the readers’ emotions in order to create a lasting effect.

11 Essay Organization X Y Z The Conclusion Paragraph:
However, the reward is not the end of the story. Moana has pushed her way through all five steps of Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey; She is the true hero of the story and she has been transformed by this experience. The Conclusion: (Wrap it all up!) ________________________________ ___________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ According to Joseph Campbell, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself, Anyone can become a hero—on purpose or even accidentally.” A literary hero does not have to have superpowers, but strength to overcome fears and succeed in this journey. The Conclusion Paragraph: Y X –  Explain the thesis again. Y –  State WHY the audience should care. Moana, as a reborn leader, shares what she has learned on the journey with others. Moana became a hero because she discovered a hero’s strength within her own heart! Z Z –  Zing readers with a lasting thought. End where you start, but do it in a way that readers will remember. and appeal to readers’ emotions in order to create a lasting effect.
