Effectiveness in teaching does not relate to teacher’s age, sex, and teaching experience. The best approach to understanding the nature of teaching is establishing a harmonious relationship between teacher student and subject 2

Learning happens and knowledge is generated. There is a famous saying: I hear… I forget; I see … I remember; I do … I understand. 4

8 Skills of Teaching Techniques
The teaching skill is specific instructional activities and procedures that a teacher may use in his classroom. Introduction Skill Skill of Probing Questions Skill of Explanation Skill of Stimulus Variation Skill of Black-board Writing Skill of Achieving Closure 8

9 Stimulus Variation Stimulus : Something that encourages activity in people or things. Variation : Different kinds The skill of stimulus variation can be defined as deliberate change in the attention drawing behaviors of the teacher in order to secure and sustain pupil’s attention towards the lesson.  Important for a teacher to ensure and sustain pupil’s attention. For this purpose the teacher uses some gestures, body movements, makes certain verbal statements etc. all these behaviors are related to stimulus variation.

10 Objectives of Stimulus Variation
To enhance the students capacity of thinking. To enhance the active involvement of the students in the teaching To enable the students for understanding the concept. To enhance liveliness in teaching. To grab the attention of the students. To minimise students mental fatigue and boredom. To learn how to use teaching aids.

11 Components of Stimulus Variation
Teacher movement Teacher gestures Change in voice Focusing Eye Contact Switching Sensory Channel ( Oral – Visual) Change in the interaction pattern Pausing Student’s physical participation

12 Purposeful movement of the teacher from one spot to another.
Teacher movement   Movement of the teacher from one spot to another with a specific purpose. Eg. (1) Moves to the blackboard to write something on the board. (2) Moves towards the back of the classroom to check what the students are doing. Purposeful movement of the teacher from one spot to another.

13 Teacher Gesture Gestures, body movements and facial expressions are used for direct attention emphasize importance explain emotions indicate size, shapes etc. It is also used in non verbal cues like body movements, facial expressions etc.

14 Change in sensory focus
 Focusing pupils attention on particular point or concept by using verbal statement like ‘look at the blackboard’, ‘see the figure in the chart’ etc. gestures and both verbal statements and non-verbal cues. Making use of the different senses like hearing, seeing, touching and so on

15 Change in speech pattern
Voice modulation to pay special attention to a particular point. Variation in : Time Pitch Speed of voice

16 Physical pupil pattern
Variation in physical involvement of the students Eg: student moves towards the blackboard to work out a problem. Student holds the chart.

17 Verbal Pupil Pattern  Involvement of the students through verbal communication style as: teacher to group teacher to student student to student   Example: asking questions, discussion etc.
