1 VERIFI® Revolutionising the delivery and management of concrete
Hello and Welcome to this session about Managing concrete in transit to the point of use Thank you for taking the time to come and hear about technology that is enabling capture of data that we’ve never had sight of before and its impact on the process. In a slight change to what was advertised, I have with me today Adrian Picard from Extrudakerb. Ex are one of our UK partners and Adrian is going to talk about the issues his organisation faced before Verifi and share the radical improvements fitting Verifi technology to his trucks has enabled.

2 Concrete is construction
It is the second most consumed substance in the world behind water. The UK uses over 22 million cubic meters per year. This is predicted to rise by 10% by the end of 2020 It is the preferred building material used in the UK`s infrastructure due to its cost, availability and versatility. It comes in a vast number of consistencies and has many different uses. Fresh concrete is the start of complex chemical reaction known as Hydration. It is a material that requires precise handling from batching to point of delivery. BUILT ON INNOVATION My notes:- Thanks Helen Good afternoon I`m AP materials & concrete technology manager for Ext Extrudakerb is a company that specialise in the design and construction of slipform concrete (concrete safety barrier and concrete drainage systems) and have done so for over 30 Years. I`d just like to outline some of the relevant facts about concrete and why it is such an important building material in todays world – slide contents Bullet points as slide except last one It is a material that requires specific handling to enable us get it to the point of delivery within its open life window without degrading its design properties. Despite this concrete is often seen as a simple and basic construction material that just requires plenty of water during placement. Despite all of this concrete is often abused 2

3 What problems are VERIFI® addressing?
Without VERIFI® : There is no visibility of concrete properties during transportation The producer loses control of the concrete properties after batching. Inability to manage the load during delivery, has a negative impact on cost and sustainability. Performance requirements of in-situ concrete are increasing as is risk of failure. Low viscosity concrete is seen as particularly difficult to transport BUILT ON INNOVATION Extrudakerb use a bespoke family of concretes that lend them selves to the paving process. For these mixes to be slip-formed successfully they need to be paved at the correct viscosity/slump As part of Extrudakerb`s growth, innovation and continues improvement it recognised that the consistency of its concrete was greatly effected by its transportation and delivery method. Use notes not slide For decades ready-mix producers have shipped concrete, a perishable construction material, with no visibility of its condition / compliance. During transportation, the producer loses control of the concrete plastic properties. Combined with the fact that concrete testing is infrequent, has questionable accuracy and is manual so has the added flaw of human error. This inability to manage the load during delivery, leads to project delays, incorrect adjustment on site leading to over-design of concrete to compensate. All of which have a negative impact on cost and sustainability. 4. As the performance requirements of in-situ concrete continue to increase, the industry – producers, contractors, engineers and clients – need better visibility of concrete properties during transit and the ability to manage and control them on route. Ready-mix trucks are bespoke vehicle specifically designed for the safe and controlled transportation of fresh concrete. However many producers dislike agitating the types of concrete used in slip-form paving due to its low viscosity and the perception that this type of concrete is damaging to the truck's hydraulics during delivery. However not spinning the drum on the way to the paver is detrimental to the concrete quality and performance, on delivery, at best unmanaged concrete will require considerable adjustment to make it useable to pave and at worst the load will be rejected. 3

4 What does VERIFI® do? VERIFI® MONITORS VERIFI® MEASURES
VERIFI® MANAGES GPS and Cellular Modem to track truck in real time Exterior Slump Display for measuring slump In-transit VERIFI® portal displays insights on admixture, slump data Onboard computer continuously transmits data from the truck to the VERIFI® Portal via the cloud, providing insights into how to improve fleet productivity and more Using GCP’s proprietary algorithm and sensors fitted on the truck, VERIFI® continuously measures concrete slump and other properties to let you know what is delivered VERIFI® manages your concrete in-transit with admixture and/or water to ensure the slump you deliver is that slump that was ordered HF How does VERIFI® address operational challenges? By monitoring, measuring, and managing your concrete In-transit. It monitors your concrete – with data transmitted from the trucks to the VERIFI® portal, you are constantly informed about where your concrete is and how long it has been there. Using GCP’s proprietary algorithms and sensors fitted on the truck, VERIFI® measures concrete slump to let you know exactly what is being delivered. But most importantly, VERIFI® manages your concrete In-transit to ensure the slump you deliver is the slump that was ordered, every time. So there is a wealth of secure, accurate data for every load of concrete detailing the slump, water additions, temperature and homogeneity of the concrete Removing the need for water additions via a hosepipe ensures we make the delivery process safer. In fact we can see when water has been added via a source outside the truck components and we can inform the relevant management so that the appropriate safety discussions can take place By keeping the concrete at the target slump we ensure it can be poured as soon as it arrives and in the shortest time possible, reducing waiting time and therefore increasing Speed Finally by making the load visible at all times during the delivery cycle we can work to eliminate the causes of waiting, extra revolutions and returned concrete all of which make the process more sustainable 4

5 How does VERIFI® work? IoT connected sensors are fitted to the truck
Cloud services Batch Computer Portal IoT connected sensors are fitted to the truck The onboard computer transmits data to the cloud every 1 to 15 seconds Nightly, the data is copied to a Business Intelligence platform Admix tank industrial IOT solution which consists of a self contained network with a series of sensors linked to aftermarket components that we install on the truck The batching computer sends ticket information via the cloud to the truck and the portal. The truck sends sensor readings to the cloud which sends them on to the portal. Data is downloaded onto servers every night and then made available the following day to the customer for analysis and reporting ©2019 GCP Applied Technologies Inc. | Confidential 5

6 Why does VERIFI® work? It’s the data science!
GCP has an unrivalled cache of ready mix data But Data for data’s sake is worthless Identify specific areas where data shows a problem Identify areas that are of specific value to the user Lhs = Data points collected during the delivery cycle every 60 seconds: The example above is an Extrudakerb load – talk through the chart In summary Delivery phases time stamped Drum speed, drum direction Revolutions (Agitation Speed, Mixing Speed) Concrete Temperature VERIFI® Fluid Additions Driver Fluid Additions Slump RHS value can only be extract ed by responding to the data This is editable using the Powerpoint footer functionality

7 BUILT ON INNOVATION Moving forward Extrudakerb invested in 8 of its own concrete mixer trucks To help run them as efficiently as possible we had the Verifi system fitted to each of them. Verifi has enabled us to monitor and keep better control of the concrete consistency during transportation and delivery. This has vastly improved productivity and reduced the amount of rejected concrete. Verifi has also eliminated the need for a paving operative to climb on to the back of the truck and manually add water. ** The ability of Verifi to show the consistence of a whole drum full of concrete is a game changer. Verifi takes control back from the Non-expert drivers and groundworkers that in the past have often been left to manage the concrete and make it fit for use. 7

8 VERIFI® - The Benefits BUILT ON INNOVATION
VERIFI® has transformed our process Concrete now gets delivered at the correct slump Controlled, calibrated, traceable water additions can be added during transit, producing homogenous concrete that is immediately fit for purpose. Ready to pour on arrival – no extra mixing time or adjustments are required. The colour coded bread crumb trail shows truck movements and delivery mode at a glance. Safety and sustainability are improved All truck movements are available for analysis. Removes the need to climb up the back of the truck. Reduces vehicle / pedestrian interactions. Reduction in fuel usage & vehicle emissions as waiting to pour and pour times have been reduced. Reduction in rejected / returned concrete. BUILT ON INNOVATION Use slide 8

9 Using Verifi potentially enables a 50% reduction in pour time
Quality and quantity have improved Concrete arrives in specification It is now poured at the beginning of its open life window. BUILT ON INNOVATION Use slide Before Verifi was utilised Extudakerb suffered from inconsistent concrete supplies across the network. Typically Extrudakerb would pave between 90m³ & 100m³a shift, where supply & site restraints allowed. With the introduction of Verifi, on some projects, we regularly pave 120m³ & above per shift. Bottlenecks and time delays are now much less likely to be concrete related Less concrete is rejected due to client specified time restrictions. More concrete can be laid per shift ensuring that programmes are completed on or ahead of scheduled time. 9

10 When Data becomes Knowledge
Knowledge reveals multiple opportunities to improve the process Safety Sustainability Speed Safety Commercial Leverage Productivity Lower carbon Materials Savings Reduce ladder climbs Reduce cab exit / entries Reduce drum speeds Higher Output Reduce Cycle Times Increase CY/ Manhour Improve asset utilization Reduce fuel usage Reduce waste Reduce cement Reduce admixture usage Reduce cement usage Reduce returned concrete Increase transparency Improve schedule tracking Reduce wait times Improve concrete consistency HF SO in summary verifi data can be used to learn about the process and provide robust problem solving which can help us meet the challenges of S, S and S Verifi data reveals many opportunities to improve all 3 – you just need to respond to the data ©2019 GCP Applied Technologies Inc. | Confidential
