1
Coding and robotics to support PBL
Greg Scrivin Te Wharekura o Mauao, Tauranga
2
Whainga/Session Aims:
Discuss project-based learning Give teachers hands-on coding experience Show how easy it is to ‘scratch the surface’ Encourage the use of digitech across the curriculum Demonstrate a few hardware gadgets Record video reflections Learn from each other
3
Project-based Learning (PBL)
The Buck Institute for Education (PBL Works) identifies the following seven project design elements: Challenging Problem or Question Sustained Inquiry Authenticity Student Voice & Choice Reflection Critique & Revision Public Product
4
Other models Inquiry-based learning Design thinking
Problem-based learning Direct Instruction Help sheets/Worksheets/Textbooks
5
Scratch 3.0 www.scratch.mit.edu
Free – projects save to your Google drive Huge library of existing projects to borrow scripts from/youtube Can record your voice or any noise into it easily to create scripted animations Works with a wide range of gadgets Teaches object-oriented programming, which feeds directly into arduino, python etc.
6
Scratch 3.0 ‘Gradual release of Responsibility’
Start with guided instruction – help sheet or online tutorial (pong) Guided practice Investigate prebuilt scripts and make a mash-up game Create longer game or animation of your own – can import images and speech/sounds Creativity can start with being unoriginal at first – scaffold

My Goals Students use Scratch and robots/lego/SAM Labs to model products Integrate video production into lessons – students use adobe suite as part of workflow, summarise learning, publish to school stream/blog Develop students towards more advanced programming - Arduino, python, animation Digital Technology credits at senior level? Continue to develop authentic PBL
