This kind of data growth means…
Today’s IT Challenges: Why Better Backup is needed? This kind of data growth means… Accelerated Data Growth Heavy CapEx to accommodate the growth Increased OpEx to service added complexity Growing Service Level requirements Necessity to Transform One of the biggest challenges facing organizations today is data growth. Depending on the analyst or survey, data growth is increasing at 30, 40, 50, and even 60% compounded annually. This tremendous rate of growth and its volume, impacts customer in four areas: Escalating capital expenditures to store, manage, and protect all of the data. Increased operating expenditures in staff and professional services to administer and support it. Growing service level expectations versus shrinking backup windows. Necessity to support the environment today and position it to support new technologies. 62% Year Over Year “In 2011 alone, 1.8 zettabytes (or 1.8 trillion gigabytes) of data will be created, the equivalent to every U.S. citizen writing 3 tweets per minute for 26,976 years.” -Computerworld citing IDC Symantec™ NetBackup Appliances

Disparity adds complexity and cost…
Today’s IT Challenges: Why Better Backup is needed? Disparity adds complexity and cost… Disparate Solutions Can’t “see” across virtual and physical machines Incompatible storage tiers Multiple management consoles Multiple vendors/maintenance/support Over the last 20+ years data has exploded, virtualization has become a reality and SLAs are harder to meet than ever. Traditional backup has been pushed to its breaking point and new alternatives have emerged. However, the current vendor landscape has made it worse, more complex and more expensive-- offering separate solutions for deduplication, replication, VMware, Hyper-V, snapshots, tape and disk. According to Dave Russell VP of Research at Gartner, "Organizations need a holistic protection strategy, a single platform or solution, to handle the variety of data types and workloads as opposed to integrating a number of disparate point solutions, which proves to be costly and time consuming,” “Backup and Recovery products need to be UNIFIED, HOLISTIC, and COMPLETELY INTEGRATED.” -Dave Russell Analyst, Gartner Symantec™ NetBackup Appliances

Eliminating Backup Complexity Challenges
Multiple solutions for backup and disaster recovery, physical and virtual. Legacy centric product architecture; multi-faceted, complex backup job processes. Pricing and licensing complexity, too many “things” to choose from. Too much data; it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack of needles. Symantec™ NetBackup Appliances

What is NetBackup Appliance?
New! NetBackup with Intelligent Deduplication New! Veritas Storage Foundation Symantec Critical System Protection Built-in WAN Optimization What is NetBackup appliance? Is it just NetBackup pre-installed on hardware? The answer is both yes and no! You may ask why? Yes, NetBackup appliance is simply backup in a box if you are looking for a solution for your data protection and disaster recovery readiness. That is the business problem you are solving with this turnkey appliance that installs in minutes and reduce your operational costs. No, NetBackup appliance is more than a backup in box if you are comparing it with rolling your own hardware for NetBackup or if you are comparing it with third party deduplication appliances. Here is why I say this… NetBackup appliance comes with redundant storage in RAID6 for storing your backups Symantec worked with Intel to design the hardware for running NetBackup optimally for predictable and consistent performance. Eliminates the guesswork while designing the solution. Symantec NetBackup Appliances
Symantec’s NetBackup Appliance family consists of two series; Backup Appliances which are the 5200 series and Deduplication Appliances which are the 5000 series. Let’s examine the NetBackup 5220 backup appliance. The 5220 starts as a 2U appliance with 4TB. It can scale with the addition of up to two (2) additional storage shelves. Each storage shelf is 3U and can expand the capacity in 24 or 36TB increments. Maximum usable capacity is 72TB. The 5220 can function as a media or a master server, and both can be easily configured with a simple mouse click through the NetBackup management console. The NetBackup 5020 is a deduplication appliance that supports 32TB of usable capacity. Up to six appliances or nodes may be connected to form a global deduplication pool of 192TB. Both the backup and deduplication appliances provide: source and target duplication, the only products in the market that provide this flexibility through a single, fully integrated appliance. Also, it provides multiple connectivity options for both Ethernet, 1 and/or 10Gig, as well as 8Gb fibre channel connectivity. Symantec has a unique front-end TB licensing model, so customers know exactly how much they are paying for in advance, regardless of their retention policy and/or the number of replicated copies they create. Software licensing is fully transferable, so this makes a great solution for media server replacements, just drop in the NetBackup appliance, transfer the licensing, and resume operations. Lastly, replication is included at no additional charge. With the NetBackup 5220 backup appliance and the NetBackup 5020 deduplication appliance, Symantec provides the choices that customer demand for their backup and recovery needs. *NetBackup 7.5 updates available for appliances late April / early May 2012 Backup appliance with dedupe Deduplication appliance 2U to 8U form factor 4U form factor Master/Media server roles Storage pool role 4TB to 72TB usable capacity 32TB ; up to 192TB with 6 nodes Deduplication at source and target Multiple Connectivity Options: Ethernet and Fiber Channel Transferable software licensing Replication at no charge Symantec™ NetBackup Appliances

Cut down resource tax from backups up to 72%
Backup server with target dedupe appliances Symantec Backup Appliance Backup Server Dedupe Device NetBackup 5220 5% daily change rate assumed. Conversation: On the left hand side we have the traditional way to bring deduplication to backups. As you can see here, the entire data needs to be read by the production and and shipped over production network to the backup server in these implementations. That is a lot of client resources like I/O and CPU wasted by backups. The data reduction happens only after the entire volume of data is moved to deduplication storage. Symantec takes the resource tax from backups out of production clients and network. The revolutionary NetBackup Accelerator, which will talk about in detail later, technology intelligently identifies the changed files without reading all the data on client. Once changed files are identified, the changed segments that are sent to the appliance. You can also turn on client side deduplication to further reduce the amount of data sent over the wire. The result is up 100x faster backups while reducing the resource requirements for backups up to 72%. Let your production systems and network spend more time serving the business! Clients Clients 100 TB with 5% change protected over 52 weeks Traditional Dedupe Accelerator and Dedupe Weekly full backups 52 x 100TB = 5200 TB 1 x 100TB + 51 x 5TB = 355TB Daily incremental backups 6 x 52 x 5TB = 1560 TB Total volume of data read by clients and shipped over production network 6760 TB 1915 TB 72% less resource usage on production clients and network! NetBackup Intelligent Deduplication
Visibility For Optimized, Green, Global Deduplication NetBackup data stream Traditional backup data stream What We See What They See ? Symantec is known for its deep technology base and its legacy understanding of files and file systems with a long history of patents supporting our path to leadership. This long standing capability gives us the unique ability to ‘see’ into the backup data stream and understand what the application is and what the data format looks like. This level of “intelligence” allows us to select “on-the-fly” deduplication algorithms that: Give NetBackup the unique ability to perform a true “Single-Pass” Backup and Recovery of both Images and Files (Granular Recovery Technology – GRT, see below) Intelligent Deduplication Optimize deduplication rates for a specific application and data set requiring less ‘brute-force’ computing power, lower cost Reduces the need for computational resources for greener and more environmentally friendly (deduplication is computationally intensive) Provides a deduplication platform or roadmap that can be enhanced and fine tuned over time as data types and applications change. On the other hand, other dedupe vendors (such as EMC) use a “variable window” approach because they ‘can’t see’ what the data stream looks like is so they resort to varying the block size and then “guess” at what the optimum dedupe might be. This is computationally intensive, requires significantly more power to prevent performance bottlenecks, and does not offer a path to improved data deduplication rates and capabilities in the future. In addition to better, lower cost deduplication NetBackup offers faster backup and restore across virtual and physical environments: What We Can Do – “Single-Pass” Backup VMDK or physical image or incremental backup “Single-Step” Recovery Full application recovery from ‘image’ backup, and/or “Single-Step” Recovery File level (or granular) recovery from ‘image’ backup Because we can ‘see the files’ in the image backup and restore directly from backup. No need to remount backup and restore file(s). No additional time or disk space required for file level restore File restores are the highest % of restore requirements What We Can Do – “Single-Pass” Backup and Recovery Fast “Intelligent” Deduplication Data Aware Use ‘less’ compute power Green Deduplication Platform Future growth Without Visibility – “Multi-Step” Backup and Recovery Slow “Guessing” at best-fit deduplication Requires ‘more’ compute power Limited to no growth potential Symantec™ NetBackup Appliances

NetBackup 7.5 Accelerator
Faster Backup, Faster Recovery Backup w/ Accelerator Full Recovery Changed file tracking + Dedupe up to 100x faster New in NetBackup 7.5 – NetBackup Accelerator is changing the game. Leveraging change tracking technology and our deduplication technology its possible to perform full backups that can be up to 100x faster. So now, instead of the time consuming cost of traversing 10s of millions of files to figure out which one’s have changed, deduplicating them (assuming of course that you’re using NetBackup’s client or source client dedupe), and then sending them over the network, we track those changed files, check to see if any of the file has already been deduped, and then back it up. By reducing the volume of data backed up and sent to storage, the performance and cost benefits are huge. End-to-end protection for Virtualized Enterprise
Protect up 3,000 virtual machines in one appliance Direct vSphere backup – No proxy server required Equipped with Symantec V-Ray Multiple types of recovery from a single backup pass – single file, applications, application objects and DR image Protect through SAN or Ethernet Our research has shown that upwards of 80% of recovery requests are for a single file. Instead of being locked into a “needle in a haystack” type of scenario – Symantec V-Ray allows for the indexing and cataloging of the files within the vmdk or VM image. That means you can recover a single file within minutes vs. hours or even days. It also gives you two types of restores from a single backup pass – the single file AND the full vmdk image for disaster recovery. This saves you valuable time and backup storage as data is only written to storage just once. Symantec NetBackup 5220 also offers you the flexibility to restore single files from ANY type of storage – disk or tape – you choose. Symantec also supports stage-less file level recovery, or said another way, the vmdk or VM image does not need to be re-staged to disk. This means you can restore single files without having to take time the to allocate disk for recovery purposes. While other vendors often imply that they provide “instant single file restore”, without V-Ray they don’t have the ability to index or catalog the files – this means two backup operations (twice the storage and twice the time) to garner the same level of granularity. It could also mean requiring the vmdk or VM image be restaged to disk as well. This means inserting another step into what should be a seamless recovery process and having to allocate dedicated disk storage – which let’s face it – could be better used elsewhere in your organization. This capability is supported across Linux and Windows and available for Microsoft Hyper-V. Symantec™ NetBackup Appliances
