4 Sepaton Scalability & Performance in Action
Scalable Performance Backup up to 10 TB per hour per node (System scales to 8 nodes & 80 TB/hour) “Before Sepaton, we fought to meet our backup windows. With Sepaton, performance has been amazing. We meet our windows and everything is clean. The Sepaton system is bulletproof.” Scalable Capacity Usable Capacity (before dedupe) scales from 48TB to 4 PB per system “We are storing far more data in less physical space than we did with our previous deduplication system.”

5 Bigger and Faster Backups at Lower Cost
Consistent and Predictive Backup and Restore Performance Industry leading ingest performance Concurrent deduplication accelerates time to completion Fastest time to safety Even Faster Restores Forward referencing eliminates “rehydration” when restoring last backup Restore up to twice as fast as inline technologies Lowest Costs* Reduce CAPEX up to 26% Reduce OPEX up to 32% Up to 29% lower total cost of ownership * Based on 5 year TCO model against EMC Data Domain and IBM ProtecTIER

6 Sepaton Differentiators in NBU Environments
Cut backup and restore times with multiple concurrent backup and restore jobs Massive parallelism backs up and restores data faster Faster wholesale recovery without reconfiguring - Identical read & write profile Ideal platform for phased transition to OST Supports both VTL and OST simultaneously Leverage existing FC infrastructure or 10GbE or both Multi-tenant OST storage servers support test and production as well as charge-back modeling Transparent data-at-rest encryption for OST Supports all HDS arrays, all disk types Saves customer fees for Symantec-managed encryption Automation, Automation… and more Automation Concurrent Deduplication Automated storage reclamation and catalog updates Intelligent replication during low bandwidth use windows Will explain OST in subsequent slides

7 Industry Leading NetBackup OST Support
NetBackup OpenStorage (OST) Supported Features Auto Image Replication (A.I.R.) Optimized Duplication Optimized Synthetics Granular Recovery Technology Accelerator Seamless migration via Sepaton Storage Pools

8 Symantec NetBackup OST Integration
Support of NetBackup OST (Advanced Features) Auto Image Replication (Replication of backup sets between multiple domains and/or multiple sites in separate NBU Catalogs) Optimized Duplication (single domain, multiple sites, multiple copies of backup sets in one or more NBU catalogs) Optimized Synthetics, NBU Accelerator and Granular Recovery Multiple retention periods through NetBackup Storage Lifecycle Policies Ultimate flexibility when it comes to leveraging customer SAN and LAN environments – protect the customer investment OST Ingest over Ethernet OST Ingest over FC SAN

9 What is Symantec OST Auto Image Replication?
Symantec OST Auto Image Replication (AIR) is used to replicate backup images between multiple NetBackup domains and/or NetBackup masters, often across various geographical sites, to improve disaster recovery  Replication is controlled by NetBackup but executed by Sepaton Leverages Sepaton’s built-in replication capabilities including one-to- one and many-to-one replication Automatic catalog management at primary and remote sites Leverages deduplication to replicate only unique data between the Sepaton devices to reduce the impact on the network between the sites Sepaton has chosen to support OST A.I.R. to support mutli-domain Netbackup environments, typical in Enterprise environments. Opt_Dup, is for single domain environments and will be supported at a later date.

10 Sepaton & OST AIR Simplify Disaster Recovery
Santa Clara Data Center – NBU Domain A Mesa AZ Data Center – NBU Domain B NBU Master Server A NBU Master or Media Server B Update Source Catalog Copy to Tape SLP SLP Update Target Catalog with Replicated images Lowers Bandwidth Requirements up to 97% Sepaton PBBA Sepaton PBBA First implementation of Symantec’s next generation replication by an independent vendor. Sepaton becomes the industry leader in the OST market by offering the first certified implementation of A.I.R. by an independent vendor. OST A.I.R. is a licensed and chargeable feature. A.I.R. requires NetBackup Release 7.1 or later.  Multi-site, multi-domain replication. Unlike Symantec’s first- generation Optimized Duplication feature for OST, A.I.R. supports multiple NetBackup domains. Multiple domains are critical for effective Disaster Recovery because they eliminate dependence on the inter-site communications link for accessing the single catalog in a single domain design. In a single domain system, the customer has to decide whether the active catalog is maintained at the primary or secondary site. If the link between the sites goes down, one site will lose access to the catalog and will have to bring up a new NBU master server and import catalogs from the VTL before any backup or restore operations can begin. Fully-automated operations. A.I.R. automates the import of catalog updates into the target site, eliminating the need for any operator actions or customer-supplied scripts. High-Performance replication. OST supports load-balancing over multiple nodes. A.I.R. supports replication over multiple links. OST A.I.R. supports ingest on one or more 10GbE links and replication on one or more 1GbE links. Like DeltaRemote, A.I.R. transmits highly-deduplicated data to optimize the required bandwidth. Simple GUI-based management. The Sepaton management console provides an OST replication configuration panel where source-target pairs are defined. Once the pairs are configured, the storage administrator controls replication using NetBackup Storage Lifecycle Policies from the NBU console. Simplified licensing. Unlike DeltaRemote, OST A.I.R. is licensed on both source and target systems. There is no licensing restriction on the fan-in or fan-out for replication. History Reporting. The OST history report provides information for tracking replication jobs and determining the efficiency of transfers.  This is all done via a plug in? are there any other software components we have developed I can mention besides DeltaStor gui? Sepaton replication controlled by NetBackup Designed for DR across multi-domain environments Deployable across the enterprise – branch office locations Minimizes RTO, reduces risk No importing catalog or tape during DR Eliminate human errors - Automation through Storage Lifecycle Policies minimizes risk of failures Enables efficient storage utilization Manage multiple retention times based on business needs

11 What is Symantec OST Optimized Duplication?
Symantec OST Optimized Duplication (Opt Dup) is used to duplicate backup images within a single NetBackup domain from one OST device (e.g. Sepaton PBBA) to another NetBackup manages the process which is executed by Sepaton NetBackup receives the file metadata so it can update the catalogs Leverages deduplication to replicate only unique data between the Sepaton devices to reduce the impact on the network between the sites Sepaton has chosen to support OST A.I.R. to support mutli-domain Netbackup environments, typical in Enterprise environments. Opt_Dup, is for single domain environments and will be supported at a later date.

12 Symantec OST Optimized Duplication
Media Server Local Device Remote Device Catalog Start Opt Dupe 1 2 Data Transfer Copy 1 Update Catalog 4 Copy 1 Copy 2 Copy 2 3 Done Or …could be Continuous Data Transfer Features Media server initiates duplication and Sepaton perform the data transfer Uses Storage Lifecycle Policies or NBU Vault Benefits Utilizes Sepaton’s replication technology to transfer data Only replicates unique data to lower impact on network Reduces workload on the media server Faster and more efficient duplication Need to have backups of catalog

13 What is a Optimized Synthetic Backup?
Symantec’s Optimized Synthetic Backup is used to “synthesize” a full backup from a combination of previous full and incremental backups Eliminates need to perform full backups on client systems* Client’s CPU and memory resources are used minimally Reduces network bandwidth and storage requirements Full data sets are not moved over network Leverages Sepaton deduplication to minimizes storage used Lowers risk and improves business RPO More frequent backups means less potential for data loss Shorter backups allow multiple backups per day (approaching CDP) Sepaton has chosen to support OST A.I.R. to support mutli-domain Netbackup environments, typical in Enterprise environments. Opt_Dup, is for single domain environments and will be supported at a later date.

14 Why Use Optimized Synthetic Backups?
Creates a Restore Ready Full Backup No “FULL+INC+INC+INC” path to recovery Faster recovery time improves RTO Backups are smaller and take less time Improves time to safety (local copy) Backups can be performed more often More restore points improves RPO Less Risk Simpler administration Less Time Less data to move More Agile More restore points Enables faster backups by synthesizing full backups in the Sepaton appliance using incremental backups and the last full backup. NetBackup now offers TSM-like “incremental-forever” backups without the disadvantage of having to restore from the last backup and subsequent incrementals. An OST Optimized Synthetic backup looks like a single full backup to NBU and the backup administrator. This approach greatly simplifies restores and improves the likelihood of successful recoveries. Shorter backup windows enable multiple backups per day, improved RPOs. Since many full backups are eliminated, it becomes feasible to do more than one backup per day, thus improving the recovery point objective. (Note that the NBU catalog will grow as additional synthetic full backups are performed.)

15 Symantec Optimized Synthetic Backups
Client Incremental Backup Full Backup Optimized Synthetic Incremental backups Lightning fast backups! Load Balanced Media Servers Today’s traditional synthetic full is created by pulling data through the media server then writing the new full image back to the device. Optimized Synthetic Optimized synthetics are created immediately by the backup appliance. NetBackup instructs which parts of previous backups to use. Backup appliance creates a pointer map – no data movement required.
