Write a test question about the kinds of food Mississippians used to sustain their villages. HUNTING / GATHERING AGRICULTURE Horticulture means “garden cultivation” and was practiced by early Mississippians. They cultivated squash, beans, sunflowers, and other plants. The Mississippians hunted for small game like racoon, rabbits, and deer. Also ate fish and turtles. They also gathered berries and other fruits as well as nuts. Maize, or corn, was the primary crop grown by the Mississippians. They practiced diversifying their crops and combined with other crops like tobacco.
