Didn’t want to pay taxes to corrupt gov’ts
Wanted better services
Journalists called muckrakers point out all of the bad stuff
Political machines, NA, workers, immigrants, Bosses

3. II. Women’s Rights Begins at Seneca Falls (1848)
New school & job opportunities
Suffrage starts out West
Wyoming is 1st to allow women to vote
Women worked hard as pioneers
National Association of Colored Women works toward votes for AA women

4. II. Women’s Rights National American Women’s Suffrage Assoc.
Started by Carrie Chapman Catt in 1890
Opposed drinking and political bosses
Split up over tactics

5. II. Women’s Rights National Woman’s Party
Led by Alice Paul
Picketed the White House
Attacked by men
Arrested
Used hunger strikes in prison
Women get suffrage with the passing of the 19th Amendment in 1920

6. II. Women’s Rights Equal rights was next Wanted an amendment
Jane Addams built a settlement house in Chicago
Hull House
Vocational classes
Childcare
Worked for child labor laws
Supreme Court said federal child labor laws unconstitutional

Theodore Roosevelt
Republican but agreed with Progressives
Gave rights to the workers
Required coal mine owners to negotiate to avoid a strike
Beefed up Interstate Commerce Commission and Sherman Anti-Trust Act
Called the “Trust-buster”

Gets national parks created
Founded the Progressive (Bull Moose) Party in 1912
Splits votes w/Republicans and Democrats win

Labor unions are exempt from anti-trust laws

Helps w/money supply

Wilson’s 14 Points is very progressive but Treaty of Versailles is not
Makes Americans not care about Progressivism anymore
