The main ideas that support the thesis In a five-paragraph essay, there are three contentions

5 Definitions Transitions Words or phrases that connect ideas
They make the paper “flow” better Examples: in the beginning, next, then, finally, in conclusion, therefore, however

6 Definitions Third-person point of view Objective and factual
Does NOT use words like I, me, and you Does NOT say “in my opinion,” “I think,” etc. Also: write all formal essays in the present tense

7 Introductory paragraph
Broad, general statement that relates to the topic. Get your reader’s attention! Thesis statement List of three contentions (1-3 sentences) Concluding sentence (transition word or phrase, followed by summary of main ideas of paragraph; if possible, insert a judgment or opinion)

8 Body paragraphs Contention
Examples that support the contention. Be specific. Include character names. Don’t give a complete play-by-play, but be sure to explain the basic plot structure that relates to your contention. Concluding sentence

9 Concluding paragraph Restate the thesis (in different words).
Restate the contentions (in same order, but in different words). Concluding sentence
