11 Writing Process Prewriting – planning, brainstorming ideas; everything you do before you begin drafting your paper. Circle Map Expository Brainstorming Graphic Organizer These are the two prewriting graphic organizers we will use when taking a paper through the full writing process. The flow map or this expository graphic organizer can be used. For the purpose of the STAAR exam, do NOT force students to write 3 body paragraphs. Instead focus on one or two really well developed body paragraphs. These are NOT the only types of graphic organizers, so feel free to use the ones your students are accustomed to using.

12 Why is prewriting important?
Consider a variety of topics (Gives you choices!) Select the best topic It helps you gather and organize your thoughts

13 Friends make our lives easier.
Personal Experiences Finding Nemo Friends help encourage, and motivate us. Friends make our lives easier. Friends hold us accountable. Importance of having a good friend Friends bring laughter and joy. Friends can teach us life lessons. Toy Story “Lean on Me” Song

14 Now, it’s your turn List at least 5 characteristics you feel are important to having a good friend. You will have 4 minutes Teacher will walk around and watch as students complete their circle maps by writing at least 5 characteristics great teachers have. Students may put down more than 5 if they’d like. If students finish before time is up, they should definitely put down more. As you walk around, you should encourage students and provide positive feedback. Be sure to let students know that for now, you are not concerned about spelling. Just to spell things the best way they can. We will worry about spelling later in the writing process.

15 Have students share their favorite place to eat from today in small groups. If time permits, allow some to share out with the entire class.

16 Flow GO! Chart What is the purpose of the Flow GO! Chart?
Have students identify which partner is 1 and which is 2. Allow ones to speak first and then 2’s 30 secs each. Next, have students take a look at their flow maps and turn-n-talk to discuss the purpose of a flow map. Walk around and listen as students talk. Then call on students with some of the better answers you heard to share aloud. The purpose is to help organize our ideas. REMEMBER: When completing the flow map, as a teacher, you do not want to be too strict that all the boxes have to be filled out with complete sentences. The flow map should not take a long time to complete. If it does, think to yourself, “Is this more of a help or hindrance to my students’ writing?” No one method of prewriting is right for everyone. Be mindful of this if students seem to struggle with completing their flow maps.

17 Tell what the selection is about
What is the purpose of an introduction? Have students identify which partner is 1 and which is 2. Allow ones to speak first and then 2’s 30 secs each. To hook the reader and Tell what the selection is about
