2 Welcome to English Language Arts sherilyn.walworth@cobbk12.org
Each day students enter and follow procedures like these. 1.Sit at your number - Copy the agenda. 2.Poems are due today, so take your poem out, and put it on your desk. Turn it over to the back, and using a black pen, write your first and last name and your roster number. Keep it at your desk for collection after I do attendance. 3. Get your stations file folder from the back of the room. 4. Get your language analysis you completed for your grammar pre-assessment out of your binder, and leave it on your desk. 5. Get out a colored pen – preferably red so that you can make corrections today.

3 Classroom Environment
Students have jobs and earn tickets for student engagement and doing their jobs. We draw for candy and other rewards. Candy donations are greatly appreciated. I differentiate for students by pre-assessing their knowledge and structuring assignments that allow them to be successful. I remind students that Language Arts is a curriculum where one can excel at the highest level of complexity regardless of placement. Class is their practice time. The standards they learn in 7th grade are on College Board testing, so the more they practice the more opportunities and choices they will have in the future. The seventh grade English/Language Arts course provides an emphasis on writing, speaking, listening, and language skills. Students will progress through the writing process as they plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish their own specific types of writing. These writing types include narrative, informative/explanatory and argument.

4 What can parents do to help? Please review the syllabus on the blog.
Make sure your child writes in his or her agenda or draws an arrow for previously written information. Utilize the Blog - I often link handouts to the blog for students who are absent. We are not allowed to give work ahead of time, but if I know your child will be absent, I will make an extra effort to put everything I can on the blog at the end of the day. I collect papers by roster number, so I put zeros in quickly along with a note, so please insist your child turn in the work. I will take the zero out when I have the assignment. Set a weekly alert for grades below a 90. Consistently check grades, and read the notes entered. I try to get zeros entered in immediately so that you can help motivate your child to turn in the work. Summative Assessments 45% - tests, major writings, major projects Formative Assessments 50% - graded classwork, quizzes, shorter writings Practice/Completion - 5%- If it is complete but late, it is a 50. ELA will not accept incomplete work for the 5% category.
