How do I get scheduled? Where do I go to walk? What is a KUBoK shift like? What should I wear? Guidelines: Must be signed up to walk a shift. Must be trained to walk a shift, please sign in! If walking for extra/class credit, don’t wait until the end of the semester to get in your hours.

5 Reasons to Join KUBoK Give back to your community.
Meet interesting and new people, networking! Thinking about applying to schools to further your education? Volunteering can make you stand out from the rest. Writing a resume? Employers love to see that a potential employee volunteers and cares about their community.

6 What KUBoK is NOT about Spying on your neighbors Busting parties
Creating vigilantes We are not involved in confrontations. We never walk alone, walk with groups of 3 or more people. We do not carry weapons.

7 Using a Radio Turn radio on before leaving KUBoK Office
Test radio before leaving office Limit unnecessary chatter and be sure to NEVER use vulgar language over the radio The police are listening to this channel, so keep it appropriate

8 When to Radio Supervisor
Every time your team changes direction “Team Green now headed West on Main” When you walk somebody home When your team needs a break If you need emergency help with a situation you are observing

9 While Walking: Be alert to anything: Out of place Occurring at an unusual time Never confront a person committing a crime or investigate a suspicious activity Don’t worry about being embarrassed when reporting Law enforcement would rather investigate nothing than be called too late.

10 How to be a Good KUBoK Walker
Make observations. Be friendly, talk to people. Take proper equipment. Radio KUBoK reflective vest Flashlight Cell phone Do not place yourself in dangerous situations! Do not leave your KUBoK team and do not let them leave you!

11 Recommendations for dealing with intoxicated persons
YOUR SAFETY IS PRIORITY !! Stay calm. Be friendly and non-judgmental. Tell the person you are worried about his or her safety. Ask about any medical problems. Keep your distance. Stand to his or her side (not in front ) when you speak. You will appear less threatening. Get help from one of his or her sober friends. Often he or she will listen to a friend’s voice. If the person resists assistance, walk away. Call the police and observe if he or she becomes aggressive or violent.

12 When a Shift is Cancelled
If a shift has been cancelled for any reason, such as a lack of volunteers, you will get an from the graduate assistant by 8pm the night of at the latest Check your frequently the day of a scheduled shift If a cancellation must occur after 8pm you will get a phone call, you should provide this number when signing up for your track it forward account This is rare, usually due to bad weather, or a volunteer cancelling in an untimely manner

13 If You Cannot Make Your Shift
You must with a preferred 48 hours notice, 24 hours notice is the absolute latest we will accept It is almost impossible to find a replacement walker at the last minute, so it is imperative that you are respectful when cancelling

14 Inclement Weather If the weather is bad, the cancelling of the shift will be at the supervisor’s discretion Example: The shift began at 11:30pm and at 1am it begins to torrential downpour. Your supervisor will send you home. Example: The shift began at 11:30pm and it begins to drizzle. The supervisor will continue the shift, unless it begins to rain harder as the night goes on.
