2 Tuesday, September 15, 2015 Objective: Students will be able to identify plot and explain how characters advance the plot. Vocabulary: Vigilance, wince, consternation, cower, synchronize, neutralize Purpose: Reviewing the components of a story enables students to be able to analyze a story. Literary Element Focus: exposition, conflict, draw conclusions

3 Vocabulary Vigilance (noun) – alert attention, watchfulness
The crossing guard’s vigilance keeps the children safe when they cross the street. Wince (verb) – to shrink or flinch involuntarily, especially in pain Consternation (noun) – confused amazement or fear Jim was filled with consternation at the thought of his upcoming root canal.

4 Vocabulary Cower (verb) – to crouch down in fear
Synchronize (verb) – to match the timing of Before we leave lets synchronize our watches. Neutralize (verb) – to counteract or cancel the effect of Wearing your seatbelt can neutralize the impact of a collision.

5 Literary Element terms
Conflict – struggle between opposing forces Man vs. man Man vs. nature Man vs. society In “Harrison Bergeron”, Harrison is struggling with the U.S. society in 2081. Setting – the time and place of a story Mood – the feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for reader. (The reader’s feelings.)

Plot – The sequence of events in a story (p. R110) Exposition – First stage of a story’s plot (p. R105) Provides background information Introduces the setting Introduces characters Sometimes introduces main conflict Rising Action – Second stage of a story’s plot (p.R112) Conflict develops Events build toward the climax

7 Literary Elements - PLOT
Climax – Third stage of a story’s plot (p. R104) The point of maximum interest or tension The turning point in a story Falling Action – Fourth stage of a story’s plot (p. R106) Shows the result of important decisions made or actions taken during the climax Resolution – Final stage of a story’s plot (p. R106 under falling action) Provides the final outcome of the events of the story
