1 Marvelous Multisensory Methods
Bobbie Lewter

2 Connections Stand and find one person in the room whom you don’t yet know. Introduce yourself and share what grade level you teach. Ask what she/he wants to learn today in our session.

3 Objectives today: 1. To familiarize ourselves with the multisensory methods and instruction 2. To be able to use multisensory methods and strategies with our students the first week of school

4 Multisensory Instruction
Multisensory instruction is teaching using all learning pathways in the brain (i.e., visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile) simultaneously or sequentially in order to enhance memory and learning.   International Dyslexia Association Dr. Orton began using multisensory techniques in the mid- 1920s.  He suggested that kinesthetic-tactile reinforcement of visual and auditory associations could solidify letter name and sound correspondence.

5 When we use our auditory modality, we learn through hearing
When we use our auditory modality, we learn through hearing. Some teachers use lectures as their primary method of teaching. Auditory

6 Auditory Auditory Instructional Strategies:
Make directions as simple and clear as possible; ask students to repeat them. Students echo all dictated sounds, words and sentences. Finger spell aloud Using chants and songs  All phonological awareness activities Auditory

7 When we use our visual modality, we use our sense of sight
When we use our visual modality, we use our sense of sight. Providing information to students in a concrete visual form helps them make connections in the brain. Students will have less aniexty about having to remember so much information. Visual

8 Visual Visual Instructional Strategies:
When presenting new information, always give visual examples. Use charts, graphs, and tables  Use a large clear font and age-appropriate lined paper Use highlighting to emphasize specific concepts Use hand gestures Visual

9 What other modalities are we using with this strategy?
Visual

10 When we use our kinesthetic modality, we learn by using our muscles and moving. These strategies help students retain information by using movement and hands-on activities to manipulate new information. Kinesthetic

11 Tactile is using our sense of touch to learn
Tactile is using our sense of touch to learn. Most often tactile strategies are coupled with kinesthetic strategies. Tactile

12 Kinesthetic/Tactile Finger spelling
Tracing in sand or on a textured surface  Skywriting Letter mapping Tracking under text with eraser or finger as student reads aloud Clap or stamp out concepts Speech movement (lips, tongue, and throat)  Spell words with letter tiles Kinesthetic/Tactile

13 Connections Share with your neighbor which strategy you are going to use in your classroom the first week of school.

14 You are going to have a fantastic school year!
