“The bishop has asked me to speak today on faith.”
What’s your reaction when you hear this as the sacrament meeting speaker stands to speak at the podium: “The bishop asked me to speak today on faith.” Perhaps: -Perfect! This will give me time to work on my Sunday School lesson I forgot to prepare. -Pretty sure I already know about this. -When are we ever going to have a sacrament meeting talk about something cool? I’m sure most of you think something like, “Though I am familiar with some aspects of faith, I realize that there is still much that I do not know. Therefore, I will pray for the speaker that they may impart and that I may receive additional light and knowledge on this topic.”

“We are all babies in this principle of the gospel.”
Speaking of Faith President Joseph F. Smith said: “We are all babies in this principle of the gospel.” “We are only beginning, the best of us, to know something of this principle of life and salvation, this principle of power. By faith, we are told, the worlds were made. ” (Collected Discourses v2, Joseph F. Smith November 1, 1891)

“Often what passes for faith in this world is little more than gullibility.”

Faith as the Assurance of Things Hoped For
“I describe these three components of faith in the Savior as simultaneously facing the future, looking to the past, and initiating action in the present.” PAST PRESENT FUTURE Faith as the Assurance of Things Hoped For Assurance and Hope of future outcomes and rewards. Often comes in the form of promises in the scriptures or from God’s prophets. (“Seek Learning by Faith,” Ensign, Sep 2007, 60–68)

The Twelve Stones at Gilgal
We should leave “stones” for our children. This is why we share faith promoting stories from our past. Each evidence of our faith can become a “stone of remembrance” to strengthen the assurance of our children. That our children may know that the Lord’s hand is “mighty” and that they may fear Him forever. This is why we visit church history sites, etc. Our Evidence becomes our children’s Assurance.

(Discourses of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 70)
That which is wrong under one circumstance, may be, and often is, right under another. God said, “Thou shalt not kill”; at another time he said “Thou shalt utterly destroy.” This is the principle on which the government of heaven is conducted—by revelation adapted to the circumstances in which the children of the kingdom are placed. Joseph Smith President (Discourses of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 70)

“[I]s it right that a just God should sweep off so many people? Is that in accordance with mercy? Yes, it was just to those spirits that had not received their bodies, and it was just and merciful too to those people guilty of the iniquity. Why? John Taylor President (Journal of Discourses, 19:158–59)

(Journal of Discourses, 19:158–59)
“Because by taking away their earthly existence he prevented them from entailing their sins upon their posterity and degenerating them, and also prevented them from committing further acts of wickedness.” John Taylor President (Journal of Discourses, 19:158–59)

“Being a loving Father, though deeply devoted to our … agency, there are times in human history when He simply could not continue to send spirits to this earth who would have had virtually no chance.” Neal A. Maxwell Quorum of the Twelve (Sermons Not Spoken (Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1985), p.91)

An example of faith as a principle of power.
Joshua 10 An example of faith as a principle of power.
60
“But faith is not only the principle of action, but of power also, in all intelligent beings, whether in heaven or on earth…. “Who cannot see, that if God framed the worlds by faith, that it is by faith that he exercises power over them, and that faith is the principle of power? And if the principle of power, it must be so in man as well as in the Deity? This is the testimony of all the sacred writers, and the lesson which they have been endeavoring to teach to man.” Joseph Smith President (Lectures on Faith, 1:13, 17)
61
Joshua 10:12-13
62
“Joshua, in the sight of all Israel, bade the sun and moon to stand still, and it was done (Josh. 10:12-13). We here understand, that the sacred writers say that … these things were done by faith. It was by faith that the worlds were framed. God spake, chaos heard, and worlds came into order by reason of the faith there was in HIM. Joseph Smith President (Lectures on Faith, 1:21-23)
63
“So with man also; he spake by faith in the name of God, and the sun stood still, the moon obeyed … and … this by reason of the faith which was in him. Had it not been for the faith which was in [him], [he] might have spoken to the sun, [and] the moon … in vain!” Joseph Smith President (Lectures on Faith, 1:21-23)
64
“[W]e understand that when a man works by faith [as a principle of power] he works by mental exertion instead of physical force. It is by words, instead of exerting his physical powers, with which every being works when he works by faith. God said, ‘Let there be light: and there was light.’ Joshua spake, and the great lights which God had created stood still.” Joseph Smith President (Lectures on Faith, 7:3)
