1 NOTE SHEET 4 – The 2 Main Types of Cells
Nostoc (High Power) Spirogyra (High Power)

2 What do all cells have in common?
ALL cells have a cell membrane, cytoplasm, DNA, and ribosomes Cell membrane – the flexible outer covering of a cell that controls what goes in and out

3 What do all cells have in common?
Cytoplasm – the liquid substance that fills up a cell DNA – cell instructions Ribosomes – assembly site for proteins

4 What are the two main types of cells?
Prokaryotic cells – small, simple cells that have a cell membrane, cytoplasm, DNA, and ribosomes (ex. bacteria cells)

5 Nostoc (Cyanobacteria)

6 What are the two main types of cells?
Eukaryotic cells – larger, more complex cells that have a nucleus and other parts (ex. animal cells and plant cells) Nucleus – cell part that holds DNA and controls most cell activities

7 Spirogyra (Protist)

8 Another way to look at it…

9 All cells have a cell membrane, cytoplasm, and DNA

10 The 2 main types of cells are prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells

11 Prokaryotic cells are small, simple, and have no nucleus

12 Bacteria cells are examples of prokaryotic cells

13 Eukaryotic cells are larger, more complex cells that have a nucleus and other parts

14 Animal cells and plant cells are examples of eukaryotic cells
