RL , RL , L Wednesday, May 1st, 2019 Aim: How does Juliet react to her parents' demand for her to marry Paris in Act III, Scene 5 in Romeo and Juliet? Objective: Students will analyze character choices and motivations to better understand the text. Do Now: Answer one of the following questions. 1.) Most of us have had situations where we’ve had to keep certain information from our parents. Have you ever avoided telling your parents the truth by carefully choosing your words when talking to them. and what was it like? OR 2.) What reasons do you have for ever disobeying your parents? How do your parents react when you do?

RL , RL , L Wednesday, May 1st, 2019 Aim: How does Juliet react to her parents' demand for her to marry Paris in Act III, Scene 5 in Romeo and Juliet? Objective: Students will analyze character choices and motivations to better understand the text. Agenda 1.) Do Now: Answer the Do Now. Turn and talk with your tablemates. Share your answers with your captain. Captain will share out with the class. 2.) Guided Reading: Together we will be reading the first half of Act 3, Scene 5 of the play and get through the first half. We’ll be stopping to breakdown certain passages, character/author choices, and plot to better understand the complex language. 3.): Group Work: Students will be working in groups to break down the conversation that Juliet has with her mother. Her words have two meanings, and students will identify both. 4.): Reflection: Considering what we said about girls being considered “property” of their parents; what do you think will happen with Juliet when she tells her father that she doesn’t want to marry Paris? How will she react?

3 Act III Journal Entry The journal entry for Act III will be due on Friday, May 3rd, as always it must be sentences and be written in first person (I, me, my, etc). A lot has happened in this act so you have to work with. These are a couple of examples of what you might want to write about: Juliet: when she learns about the death of Tybalt and has to pick a side Romeo: when he’s hiding out at the Friar’s cell, waiting to learn the Prince’s punishment for him. Benvolio’s emotional state: after failing to break up yet another fight between the two families The Friar: when Romeo comes to him after killing Tybalt Juliet: when she learns she has to marry Paris (Which we’re going to read about today!) Remember, try to get into the mind of the character you choose. How are they feeling, what are they thinking, what would they say, and what do you want to do?

4 Romeo and Juliet So remember when Lord Capulet was saying that Juliet was shut in her room, alone with her sadness? No, that’s not the case. Romeo and Juliet have spent the night together and now morning has come. When Friar Lawrence was telling Romeo to see where Romeo was to go after spending time with Juliet? Juliet tries to keep Romeo with her as long as she can. How cute, but Romeo knows that he must go or else he faces some serious punishment. Juliet eventually gives in and acknowledges that Romeo must go and allows him to leave, and then the nurse enters who tells Juliet that her mom is coming to tell her something. What is it?

5 Off to Mantua You Go Before Lady Capulet arrives, Romeo drops down from the ladder and the two lovers share their goodbyes. Who seems more optimistic going forward, Romeo or Juliet? What does Juliet say to Romeo when he’s down the ladder and how does Romeo respond? “Thou art so low as one dead in the bottom of a tomb” (54-55) and “And trust me, love, in my eye so do you.” They are telling each other that the other looks dead. That doesn’t sound too good. Lady Capulet enters the scene and immediately scolds her for still being sad about the death of Tybalt. Some sadness is okay, but you’re too sad, and get over it. Ouch... She tells Juliet that she needs to be more sad about the fact that the villain who killed Tybalt is still alive. What do you think about Capulets’ plan on getting revenge for Tybalt’s death?

6 Romeo Must Die Juliet is confused because her mom says a villian killed Tybalt, but Romeo (in her eyes) is no villain and she speaks to make it seem as if she’s agreeing with her mother, but she’s, in actuality, expressing her love for her husband. As the two talk, Lady Capulet reveals that the family has come up with a plan to get revenge over the death of Tybalt. What does she say will happen? The Capulets have sent a man to Mantua, where Romeo is and there they will attempt to poison his drink one day; however, the plan to murder the villain isn’t the only “good news” Lady Capulet brings with her. What does she have to tell her daughter again? “You can thank your father for arranging this joyous event in your time of sadness! He’s planned for you to marry the wonderful Paris on Thursday!” How does Juliet react to the “day of joy” her parents planned for her? How does her mother react?

7 I Won’t Do It Juliet clearly doesn’t want to marry Paris, so why doesn’t she just go with Romeo to Mantua? That would solve the problem, no? In the age in which the play was written girls and women were seen as “property” of their parents. Although they would marry, they didn’t have any independence therefore the thought of running away would not have crossed their mind. After her mother proposes the wedding to Juliet, she expresses surprise at the unexpected plan. What reasons does she give her mother for not wanting to marry on Thursday? Juliet knows that she must somehow convince her parents to postpone or even cancel the wedding if possible. She needs time to come up with a plan and she says that it is too sudden of a marriage and that Paris should come to win over her love, not just simply get married

8 “Tell him so yourself, and see how he will take it”
Juliet’s mother has already told her of the plans her father has come up with and Juliet immediately expresses her disapproval. She doesn’t reveal to her parents why, but we know why she doesn’t want to and cannot marry Paris. Why is that? Right! She’s already married to Romeo and her parents don’t know. (DRAMATIC IRONY) Lady Capulet seemingly passes responsibility of convincing Juliet to her father. “I tried and she won’t listen, your turn.” Juliet’s parents don’t seem to be taking her disobedience very well. They say terrible things about her. What does her mother say? What about her father? Lady C: “I would the fool were married to her grave!” Wow. Her mom just wished she were dead for saying no... Lord C: “Unworthy as she is, that we have wrought so worthy a gentleman to be her bride” She has the audacity to reject Paris? She should be considering herself lucky to be given this opportunity.

9 Reflection Considering what we said about young girls being considered “property” of their parents, what do you think will happen with Juliet when she tells her father that she doesn’t want to marry Paris? How will he react to the news? What will be the punishment he issues his daughter for her disobedience? In 3 or 4 sentences make a prediction about the events of the play moving forward. (Hint: Remember how Capulet reacted when Tybalt was disobeying him at the party)
