1 Trans History: Key Concepts

2 A quick recap… What do you remember from the last lesson?
Can you remember what trans, cis and non-binary mean? What is gender diversity?

3 What is gender diversity?
There are lots of people who don’t fit in to their societies idea of gender and who break away from traditional gender stereotypes. Gender diversity is how we show our gender through what we wear, what we do, what we like. For some people it is also about how they experience their own gender. What do you think of the pictures? Are there any ways that you break away from gender stereotypes? How might people who don’t fit in to the stereotypes be treated? Why?

4 Gender Expression People often have particular ideas about gender that is taught to us. This means that we are sometimes encouraged to wear certain clothing, behave a certain way, or choose certain toys or hobbies based on our gender. People who do not conform to these gender expectations might describe themselves as gender diverse. What messages are often given to girls? What messages are often given to boy? What messages are given to people who are neither?

5 Gender Identity When you are born your parents are told “Congratulations! It’s a boy!” or “Congratulations it’s a girl!” but this is your biological sex (which is decided by your genitals, hormones, genes, internal organs etc). This is NOT your gender! Some people’s gender matches their biological sex. Some people feel like a girl even though they were told they were a boy. Some people feel like a boy even though they were told they were a girl. Some children and adults don’t feel like a girl or a boy, despite being told that these are the only two options. What do you think it feels like to feel like one gender but have everyone around you tell you that you are a different gender

6 Gender identity! (Your brain)
Your gender identity is how you think about yourself and the gender that you identify with and feel that you are. What do Woman, Non-binary and Man mean? Have a think about what your gender identity is. How do you know what it is? How do you know what gender you identify with? – Year 6 response “You just know!”

7 Your gender expression!
Your gender expression is how you act, dress and behave. What does Feminine, Androgynous and Masculine mean? Have a think about what your gender expression is. Is it the same every day? Have you ever been told you shouldn’t wear something or should like something because of your gender? How did it make you feel? How do you know what gender you identify with? – Year 6 response “You just know!”

8 Terminology Trans Cis Non-binary Woman Man
There are lots of different words that people used throughout history to describe people who were gender diverse as well as to describe people who fitted into societies’ gender expectations. Some of these are words we still use today, however some of them are now out of date and don’t get used much anymore. Words we use today: Trans Cis Non-binary Woman Man Activity In pairs write down on your white boards what you think these word mean

9 In your groups you are going to be given a paragraph to read…
Read it Discuss it as a group. Underline the important information. Share what you have discovered with the rest of the class!

10 Really important… Trans - It is deemed important that the word trans is only used by people who choose it for themselves; we should not label people without their consent! Cis - It is seen as an important word to use in order to avoid describing cis people as “normal”, for this implies that trans people are therefore “not normal”. We are all different and all equal. There are no outsiders in our school. Everyone is welcome.

11 Reflection One thing you learnt from today’s session
